Clara?

Dd is currently 10wks ( age 20 so I'm slightly less than enthused but happy for her non the less). She has a current track record for horrific names (for pets!), but I feel like I could get behind this for a girl... thoughts please?

I know a little Clara, two actually (one with a K) - it suits them.

Chocolateandcarbs · 19/12/2018 05:49

Love Clara

PickleMeThis · 19/12/2018 05:50

I know a few little Clara’s. I like it. 2 are pronounced Clarrr-a and one is Claire-a. I like both pronunciations.

FlyingMonkeys · 19/12/2018 06:10

She going for the Clarrr-a pronunciation. I think it's nice in the current climate for bygone names without being another Ida, Eva, Rose? As lovely as I think they all are btw.

I knew a Clara at school. She wanted to be a Claire-a but people pronounced it Clarrr-a.

Depends how much it would you annoy if mis-pronounced but I imagine it would happen quite often.

Bluebonnieblue · 19/12/2018 06:27

Lovely! Sweet, vintage, classy.

Escolar · 19/12/2018 06:28

I love Clara

Stringofpearls · 19/12/2018 06:31

It's okay, it makes me think of someone very horsey though.

PickleMeThis · 19/12/2018 06:32

Happilyacceptingcookies I disagree. I think with the popularity of Dr Who’s
Clarrr-a more people of this generation will use that pronounciation.
The Claire-a I know is named after a great grandmother.

blueskiesandforests · 19/12/2018 06:33

Blimey don't expect to choose your grandchild's name Shock

Clara is nice - clarrr-a. I've never heard it pronounced Claire-a though, that's horrible and makes my toes squirm. The idea of it being pronounced Claire-a would put me right off using it. Does it really get pronounced like that?

nuttyknitter · 19/12/2018 06:35

Bit worried that you 'feel you could get behind it'. This is your DD's choice.

FlyingMonkeys · 19/12/2018 06:55

No, no obviously not my choice! She ran the name past me as her current 1st choice and asked for my opinion so I'm throwing it out to a wider audience. By me getting behind it I really just mean I like it. I just wondered what other opinions are, as her friends have apparently been a bit 'meh which made her seek my opinion (I'm normally last on the list to be asked 😂).

Clara is a lovely name not super common but used on occasion.

I like Carla.....

Happilyacceptingcookies · 19/12/2018 09:37

picklemethis fair enough, I don't watch Dr Who so didn't know about that. I am also unaware when names are from Game of thrones!

Shadow1234 · 19/12/2018 09:48

I love the name Clara.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 19/12/2018 13:51

It's lovely.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 19/12/2018 13:57

I have a Clara :)

starkid · 19/12/2018 15:15

Clara is lovely and I like her pronuciation :)

Pemba · 19/12/2018 15:20

Claira pronunciation IS nicer though, and softer. I also had a great aunt named this. It is the traditional English pronunciation. Blueskys comments are ridiculous.

The Clah-ra pronunciation as in Doctor Who is continental. But seems to be now the most popular, the other is becoming forgotten and you get ignorant comments. I think they still often use 'claira' in the USA though.

ZebraKid71 · 19/12/2018 15:24

I like it, it's quite popular now which out me off it for dd1, but it's a really lovely name.

blueskiesandforests · 19/12/2018 15:45

Pemba it's no more ridiculous for me to say Claire-a makes my toes skirmish and is horrible than for you to say it's nice - it's a personal opinion.

Neither is it ridiculous for me to state I've never heard anyone call anyone else Claire - a.

Surely most British people first encountered the name Clara via the Heidi stories, which have been popular for over 100 years.

blueskiesandforests · 19/12/2018 15:46

*squirm not skirmish - it would be ridiculous to have skirmishing toes Grin

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 19/12/2018 15:50

It’s a lovely name, like the little girl in the Heidi books who Heidi goes to live with in Frankfurt!

PickleMeThis · 19/12/2018 16:31

@Happilyacceptingcookies dr who has a lot to answer for. The rise in popularity of Rose, Martha, Amelia, Rory and Clara can all be sourced back to when the companion with that name was in the show!

mogtheexcellent · 19/12/2018 16:37

I love it. The Clara i know is Irish and pronounced it claire-a.
