Winnie

NC because the name is a little unusual and I'm paranoid that it could link my profile to me Smile

I adore the name Winnie. I always have, even as a little girl! The problem is, I despise Winifred and any other long name (believe me, I've searched and searched!)

Now I know it's a bit unusual, but what do you think of Winnie? We have our heart set on naming our daughter this, maybe something like Winnie Violet or Winnie Genevieve. I just wanted to ask on here as I know the MN jury will be brutally honest with me. What do you think?

Without giving too much away, we have a very difficult surname, foreign, long, and very heavy on the 'A's and 'L's, which means that any name ending with 'a' has had to be dismissed (we loved Alma) as well as any names ending in 'l' (there goes Nell and Mabel) and any names with too many of these letters in, as well as most one syllable names which sounds a bit short and ridiculous next to such a long surname. (I know some long surnames compliment short names but ours really doesn't for some reason!) Names which end in 'R' are also out (had to dismiss Eleanor as it runs into the 'A' at the start of our surname). Basically, because of our surname we have very few first name options and names ending in 'y' or 'ie' are pretty much the only set which don't sound either too blunt or like a tongue twister! So this is another reason why Winnie is good for us.

Another thing we should add is that we don't live in the UK so it's important that the name can be pronounced easily where we live, which Winnie can, while most others can't. Also gets rid of any of the "Winnie the Witch" connotations (not sure if that would have been a problem anyway?) but just wanted to set the scene/pretty much beg you to tell me you like it Grin

So what do you think, MN jury? Please be gentle!

I don’t personally like the sound of Winnie, but there is a Winnie aged around 8 in my dc’s class (fairly conservative area, most girls called things like Rosie and Lucy) and it doesn’t seem to raise any eyebrows/ cause problems. Although unusual, it fits with a certain popular style of name - I do think Connie is a lot nicer though.

LetsSplashMummy · 20/12/2018 10:22

I think Genevieve, nn Ginny, is a much easier name to carry off if you're worried. I'm not sure I'd use the two together (Winnie Genevieve, Winnie Ginny) but it might be okay, people don't tend to shorten middle names.

FestiveNut · 20/12/2018 10:26

I also like Ginny, but would use Ginevra instead of Genevieve. Genevieve is the dog from Madeleine in my head.

qumquat · 20/12/2018 20:59

I know a little Winnie. It's very on trend; the next stage of Granny chic. I can't imagine a little Winnie being teased these days. It's not to my taste but absolutely go for it if you love it!

qumquat · 20/12/2018 21:05

bluebonnieblue I don't think hipster here is meant pejoratively. Winnie just is the kind of name that's trendy with a certain demographic at the moment. E.g. 'Winnie's' dad is likely to have a beard and drink craft beer while her mum makes fermented food.

DramaAlpaca · 20/12/2018 23:23

I'm sorry, but I think Winnie is a hideous name & I can't think of anything positive to say about it.

Connie is much nicer, but it would have to be short for Constance.

whatstheplanphil · 20/12/2018 23:28

My lovely next door neighbour was called Winnie and she was such a wonderful women so I love the name . If I had a girl she would have been called Winnie , love Winnie Violet .

SnowyPaws5 · 20/12/2018 23:31

I adore it OP. Go for it.

Kokeshi123 · 21/12/2018 00:25

How about a Welsh name that includes the "wyn" sound--there are lots of nice ones here.

I really would give a longer name on the BC for "Winnie"--I think it's pretty awful (sorry) and I would absolutely hate to be called "Winnie" myself.

BackforGood · 21/12/2018 00:36

I now it is a very old and traditional name, which although I'm not keen sits well with all the other 'old fashioned names' that are currently now very fashionable again, but my first thought was 'Winnie the Pooh', and Winnie the Pooh does seem to be back in vogue again this year particularly with the Christopher Robin film having been released.
I do think she would get a lot of 'Winnie the Pooh' comments. I personally wouldn't set my dc up to be called 'poo' as a nickname.

www.babynamespedia.com/names/girl/wen-end Actually, scratch "wyn"--it appears that this is used for boys' names!

Lots of nice names ending in "wen" however, for girls. How about Bronwen or Anwen?

puddled2 · 21/12/2018 01:09

Love it 😘

Bluebonnieblue · 21/12/2018 10:30

Oh gosh, not Constance! 😂 Connie is very sweet and another consideration but I just don't love it like Winnie! Wyn is cool, but I really love the spelling of Winnie too, so I think I'll just go for it after seeing all your helpful comments and responses, thank you so much! Really happy to see so many people like it - I knew it was going to be a marmite name but I didn't realise that the majority would say they like it or even have strong positive reactions so I'm really happy. Thank you so much everyone!

I love it @Bluebonnieblue ❤️ I know one 3 year old Winter who is known as Winnie. I love that!

IMissMargaritas · 21/12/2018 15:33

My DD will be called Eowyn (from Lord of the Rings) when she's born in April - my mum has shortened it to Winnie already though :)

I love it!

thatshabbychick · 23/12/2018 07:48

My friend has a daughter called Wini- May.
I wasn't sure at first, but the name is unusual where we live (I like unusual names) and it really suits her. They're quite a cool, quirky family so they can pull off having children with funky names x

MumUnderTheMoon · 23/12/2018 09:03

I think Winnie is lovely but I'm not sure that either of your middle names flow well after it I think if you also have a long surname I would go for no middle name at all or if you must one with only one syllable like Fay/Fae/Faye or James would be lovely.

hoping2018 · 23/12/2018 09:46

Love Winnie but only as a nn should have a longer version.

Any welsh connections - loads of their names have a wyn in them!

MikeUniformMike · 23/12/2018 14:41

Fern Britton has a daughter called Winnie. I like it but there is Winnie the Pooh.
Wyn is a Welsh boy's name and was massively popular as a middle name for boys and girls in the 1960s.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/12/2018 18:57

Winnie is not cool. To me anyway. It's plain and frumpy.
