What are your thoughts on long names?

I ask this question because I always loved longer names, I feel like they lend themselves to more nicknames and sound lovely.

The issue is that when I had twin boys, I named them Zachary and Nicholas, and everyone keeps making comments about them having long names. Every time we had an appointment, we would say their names and people would say things like “Well that’s quite a big name...”

Is it unusual now to use long names? What are your thoughts? Do you prefer shorter names or longer names?

My identical boys are Zachary and Joseph and I've never had any comments re length of their names :)

Both my DDs have long names ( well, the second is medium length but 3 syllables so effectively long iyswim ! ) I have never regretted those choices and neither girl has chosen to shorten their names. I did have a moment of doubt when watching DD1 at a group activity when she was learning to write and had to put her name - her table companion Amy had finished and was up and away whilst DD1 was still on the foothills of writing out her name :/

I agree that longer names are better as they allow more nickname options and I think they are also easier for a baby to grow in to as an adult.
Zachary and Nicholas are lovely names OP and Zac and Nick sound like great nn for twin boys imo

One of my dds has a long name no one has commented. Her first name and surname are 18 letters it's fine

My sisters all have long 3 and 4 syllable names whilst I got called Lucy.
I don’t mind my name but I do wish my parents had have called me something longer that could be shortened. I always feel like I’ve got a ‘little girls’ name.

I like longer names, DD's first name is 8 letters long and she has 2 middle names, plus a variety of nicknames which I like.

Tbh I wouldn't think of Zachary as a long name really, Nicholas is quite. Love both names
