If we love the name Joshua...

...what other names might we like?

Baby is due in January and we've been set on the name Joshua for a boy since very early on, to the point where we haven't really thought about other options.

However, we now know two little baby Joshuas who've been born recently and are starting to worry that it's too popular.

Does anyone have any similar names we might like? Or should we just stick with our original choice?

Thanks for your help.

I have a little Joshua. It's more common than our other sons name, and we were undecided until he was born but I love it now and don't care at all that it's a fairly common/classic name. I initially thought it was a bit dated when we thought of it (from my generation so late 80s kids) so in some ways it's nice to see it is quote popular after all.

It's up to you but I wouldn't set aside a name you really like due to it becoming more popular. My DH has three close friends with his name (its always within top 10 boys makes if not top 5) and none of them have felt diminished for it.

James
Nicholas/Nicolas
Rowan
(Bit of a stretch: Julian)

But if you like Joshua, stick to it - I regretted changing my preferred name as a relative had a baby a couple of weeks before and used 'my' name

Also, Jonas

I'm not sure what similar means? Similar sound, similar religious associations, similar popularity etc but how about
Elliot
Josiah
Elijah
Ezra

It is popular, its been in the top 20 since at least 1996. Its a nice name, if you love it you should use it.

I had Joshua on my list, I now have two sons called Luke and Toby.

I like Joash, which is another Old Testament name, but much more unusual, while still easy to spell and pronounce. I like Joe and Ash as short forms for it too.

Phebes · 08/12/2018 14:54

I don’t think it’s too popular. I meet lots of little Harrys, Charlies, Tobys and Arthurs but don’t know any Joshuas under 10.

Nathaniel? Samuel? Joseph? Jonah?

ZebraKid71 · 08/12/2018 15:00

I put it in the same category as tobias. I don't know any little Joshua's, they're all over 20. It's lovely.

OlennasWimple · 08/12/2018 15:18

i know quite a few small Joshuas, but it's not like Harry or Jack in terms of very very popular

What is it you love about the name? The sound? The meaning? Biblical connections?

Sophronia · 08/12/2018 20:41

I think it’s in the top 10, so quite popular.

I have a Joshua. He's 12
I could count on 1 hand the amount of Joshuas I know despite it being a top 10 name since the 90s.

His brother is Dominic. The only other boys names I love are Ezra and Elliott
