Gianna

I'm loving the name Gianna at the minute. Is this weird to use if we're not Italian? I do have italian family but not blood related. We're both brunette if that makes a difference!

Would pronounce it Gi-ah-na with Gia as a nn. Possible middle names would be Paige, Willow, Ruby, Violet.

Opinions or suggestions please!

Thanks Smile

When I saw your thread title I thought that it might drive you mad that people will pronounce it jee-ah-na but if that’s your preferred pronunciation then I guess the issue is moot.

Gigi would be a cute nickname too.

It's very old-fashioned for Italians. Also short for Giovanna.

It's Joanna.

Would be weird if you weren't Italian.

I love it! And love the nn Gia. Always have. I used to watch full house as a kid and there was a character on that called Gia!

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2018 22:34

I like it, but prefer it pronounced properly the Italian way.

Picknickers · 06/12/2018 22:57

If you've both found a name you like you are blessed! Go for it!

Me too. Really dislike the jee-ahna pronunciation.

Pemba · 07/12/2018 01:28

OK, so what IS the Italian pronunciation out of interest? I would have guessed jee-anna ? Rather than jee-ah-na ?

moredoll · 07/12/2018 01:30

Prefer Anna.

ThanksItHasPockets · 07/12/2018 06:54

It’s JAN-na. The ‘i’ is there to make a soft ‘g’ sound but is not pronounced as an ‘ee’ sound.

gummibears · 07/12/2018 08:18

I was going to say the same: it's pronounced JANN-ah. Lovely name.

IVflytrap · 07/12/2018 13:51

I like it, but yes definitely pronounce it correctly. The "Gi" combination together is the same as the English J sound. So Gianna is Jan-na, Giovanni is Jo-van-ni, etc.

Tallie12 · 07/12/2018 16:59

Thanks all! My Italian family pronounce it the way I wrote,so I'd assumed that was correct, oops!

I'm now thinking just Gia as a stand alone name would be better and have less pronounciatio issues.

How would you pronounce it? Confused Già is an Italian word, pronounced Ja - and it means "already". Surely that would be more confusing?
