Elsa and Olaf

Not a joke-OH is Scandinavian and quite keen for the names Elsa and Olaf (strong family connection) for our baby. I’ve heard these are names now popular or familiar from frozen but as we haven’t got kids yet, not sure how strong is the association and is it likely to fade soon?

Tell him to let it go. ...

My thoughts exactly....😂

They are really cute names but people will assume you are MASSIVE Disney fans. You should definitely watch the film as people will associate the characters with your child.

Printerneedsink · 01/12/2018 22:34

Is he Norweigan? Names aren't the same in all of Scandinavia. If you like the names then I'd say it's fine, but people will associate those names with Frozen.

BackforGood · 01/12/2018 23:17

In the UK (and I presume USA ??) Olaf would be associated with the snowman from Frozen by almost everyone.
If you are living in Scandanavia it will be different, but in the UK, he would just constantly get people referring to it, and would get very fed up of it.

I think Elsa slightly less so - depends a bit on how keen on Disney people are. It is a longstanding popular film for little people and very well merchandised and promoted with fancy dress, toys, and party themes many years on from the film coming out.
I'm old enough to think 'Elsa' should be a lion Wink I still know of the film and characters though my dc were "too old" for it when it came out.

nocluenoidea · 01/12/2018 23:26

@BackforGood I disagree, Elsa would be far far more connected with the film than Olaf. There's Elsa merchandise everywhere and little girls want to be Elsa. Olaf doesn't have that same following.
And yes- people will think you are MASSIVE Disney fans!

Princesspeachy0 · 02/12/2018 09:24

I think u could get away with Olaf as a middle name (maybe) but not as a first name.
The film has been so popular!

SantaBabycharly · 02/12/2018 09:25

You’re having an Olaf !!!!!

villamariavintrapp · 02/12/2018 09:47

There’s also Olaf the fart..

VeniVidiViciTwice · 02/12/2018 09:51

Elsa is lovely but I really would think of the snowman from frozen with Olaf. Elsa you could definitely get away with even with the Frozen connection.

rogueantimatter · 02/12/2018 09:56

How about Ola for a girl? Used in eastern Europe but extremely close to Olaf obviously. Also used in the northern isles of Scotland.

3out · 02/12/2018 09:57

I’d go for it. Once a child has grown into their name then they own it and when you hear it you think of that person rather than popular culture. I am from a heavily Scandi influenced part of Scotland though, so Scandi names are very normal here.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/12/2018 09:57

We have a little Olaf at school. His family are Swedish too. He's just the most lovely little guy, so I'm hugely biased towards that name now, plus I think it's a very masculine name well suited for an adult too. Definitely go for it!

Elsa, not so much... It's become so commonplace and a bit yawn. Is there another family name you could talk your DH into on those grounds?

MeganJ93 · 02/12/2018 14:49

Elsa is beautiful and definitely should be used if you like it.

I would definitely reconsider Olaf though. Perhaps as a middle name if it absolutely must be used?

Printerneedsink · 02/12/2018 17:07

Ola is definitely a boy's name in Sweden.

BruegelTheEIder · 03/12/2018 00:23

I'm gonna go against the grain here (and I've never seen Frozen).

Elsa is pretty but is really similar to the whole Ella, Elsie, Ellie, Elle, etc. trend that we've been going through in the last few years. I guess that's why it's been popular in this thread!

Olaf is really cool. It's on my list if I have any more DS. It's a strong name.

GlitterPixie · 03/12/2018 00:37

I work with a Norwegian guy named Olaf and all he ever gets is comments about Frozen and Snowmen etc. He’s pretty fed up of it now

incallthebloodytime · 03/12/2018 00:52

I'd avoid

Yeah you can kind of get away with names but being the kid isn't fun. Postman pats cat was all I got in nursery and primary school. I don't think he's as big a deal now but it used to really annoy me to the point I went to school and told everyone I had changed my name. I hadn't so it didn't really work out but it's really annoying to be that kid

starkid · 03/12/2018 13:18

Noooo middle names only I'd say!

thatshabbychick · 23/12/2018 08:19

Both names are lovely and it would be great to carry on your husbands family names, however, there I absolutely NO way of avoiding the Frozen connection. I think 95% of people would hear "Elsa and Olaf" and think of the film. Its a film that will be watched and thought of for years to come. It's a lovely film, so it would have a negative association, but you may get some people laugh at the name choices/find them very comical or think that you've named them after the film.
I would use one of the names (the one that has the most significance for your family) and maybe think of an alternative for the other name x

thatshabbychick · 23/12/2018 08:19

That meant to say that it "wouldn't" have a negative association x
