Joannie or Joni?

RedPandaFluff · 25/11/2018 15:23

I'm not even pregnant yet (well, I might be, Ive just had IVF and I'm in the dreaded 2-week wait) but I've always wanted to call any daughter I had after my grandmother, Joan, as she was the loveliest soul that ever walked the earth.

Is Joannie old-fashioned though? Would Joni be better?

Joni is lovely IMO.

IVflytrap · 25/11/2018 15:38

I really like Joni, but Joanie is nice too.

I wouldn't spell it Joannie with two Ns because I keep reading is as Jo-annie (ie, three syllables).

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 25/11/2018 15:39

Joni FTW!

bastardkitty · 25/11/2018 15:40

Joni - definitely not the other one.

Nightlights · 25/11/2018 15:42

Oh I think Joanie is very sweet and much more close to your grandmother's name. Would she be Joan though, do you just mean as a nickname? To me, Joanie sounds British and Joni sounds American but that probably means nothing!

MartaHallard · 25/11/2018 15:51

To me, Joanie sounds British and Joni sounds American

Joanie was a character in Happy Days, wasn't she? Can't get much more American than Happy Days!

I agree that Joannie looks as if it should be said as Jo-annie. I'd have either Joanie or Joanne, to avoid confusion. Or what about Joanna? (Jo-anna)? It was a variant of Joan in the past.

Cbeebiesrehab · 25/11/2018 15:52

Joni is beautiful!❤️

Pimpernell · 25/11/2018 15:53

Joni. But I'm a fan of the amazing Ms Mitchell.

Peachbubble · 25/11/2018 15:55

Sounds quite old fashioned to me or American. Personally, I'd use Joan as a middle name or go for Joanna as a first name instead.

kenandbarbie · 25/11/2018 16:01

I think Joanie with one n. Or Joni.

RedPandaFluff · 25/11/2018 16:02

Oh yes, one 'n' does look better, actually.

'Joanie' is closer to my granny's name and although I like Joni Mitchell I'm not a mega-fan; so I'm put off Joni because of that. I think 'Joan' is a little old-fashioned, so I'd like to add the cuteness of the extra syllable.

Not so keen on Joanna, for some reason.

Most of you are saying 'Joni' but I still prefer 'Joanie' . . . oh I really hope this becomes an actual dilemma :-)

My daughter is two and a bit. Her name is Joan but pretty much everyone calls her Joni. It was a family name for us too, no-one has ever remarked negatively (to our face anyway)

Danglingmod · 25/11/2018 16:04

Joanie the nicest
Joni second nicest
Joannie looks wrong

worriedaf · 25/11/2018 16:05

I really love Joanie!

Danglingmod · 25/11/2018 16:05

Oh, and I hope it does become a proper dilemma for you too, OP Flowers

Pimpernell · 25/11/2018 16:12

That's it then OP, go for Joanie in that case. Smile

OneStepMoreFun · 25/11/2018 16:12

I love Joanie spelled with one n. Less keen on the Joni spelling even though I love the singer.

PuppyMonkey · 25/11/2018 16:17

Yes to Joanie

Joannie would sound too much like Joanne - ee.

ReginaPhalange89 · 25/11/2018 16:18

Joni ! Love that

JollyGiraffe · 25/11/2018 16:20

If you love Joanie, pick Joanie!

Fingers crossed that all works out for you Flowers

olympicsrock · 25/11/2018 16:20

I like Joanie

Messalena · 25/11/2018 16:40

I would go with Joan for the BC, but call her Joanie.

Good luck!

ezeriaj · 25/11/2018 16:41

I love Joni

hippipotamiwantstoloseapound · 25/11/2018 16:42

Joanie (one n) without a doubt! Love it. Good luck!

NameChange30 · 25/11/2018 16:43

You don't like Joni Mitchell 😱

Joanie is fine for a child but it's a bit cutesy for an adult woman. You could just call her Joan. It's old fashioned but those names are fashionable atm.

Or use Joan as a middle name.
