Pronunciation of Anastasia

Just wondering how people would pronounce the name Anastasia? I think I would be more inclined to pronounce it Ana-stay-sia rather than Ana-staa-sia. Not sure which way I prefer it.... but Im thinking the stay pronunciation sounds a little softer and sweeter, but the other way is perhaps the true pronunciation of the name.

Anna STAY zee ah.

abiirthdaycake · 25/11/2018 09:40

I'd say Ana-stah-see-ah (or zee-ah) unless told otherwise - I think that's the standard pronunciation in most languages

SheHasNotions · 25/11/2018 09:47

I think it’s just one of those names that have a few acceptable pronunciations, as it’s used in various different countries.

I’m more familiar with Anna-stay-zia but I have met Anna-STASS-ia and Anna-stass-IA too.

daisypond · 25/11/2018 09:51

In Russian I think it's pronounced something like Ana-sta-SI-ya, with the stress on the SI. It shortens to Nastya. I don't think anyone will naturally pronounce it like that in the UK, though. I don't know how it's pronounced in Greek, though.

Ana-stay-sha for me

FindaPenny · 25/11/2018 09:55

Thank you for all the answers. Probably should have asked in previous post... But which pronunciation do people prefer and will the name be associated with 50 shades of grey? Also is it a name you like?

I associate it with the Russian princess. 50 Shades is no big deal any more imo.

MikeUniformMike · 25/11/2018 13:55

Anna Stay-sha

Syvilla · 25/11/2018 14:42

Anna - stazz - ee - uh

Lulu1919 · 25/11/2018 15:01

Anna stay shah

MrsFoxPlus4 · 25/11/2018 15:15

I know one, she’s 6. Said Ana-sta-SI-ya but everyone calls her Anya

FindaPenny · 25/11/2018 15:32

Thanks everyone, good to know it's acceptable either way

I would day it An-ast-asia (like Asia the continent.)

honeysucklejasmine · 27/11/2018 20:36

Ana-stay-see-a, as in the DreamWorks film about the Russian Princess.

RedDwarves · 27/11/2018 20:52

It'd be anna-stay-sha (or "zha") in Australia.

This is the pronunciation among the masses of Greek Australians I know, too.

FindaPenny · 28/11/2018 10:27

Thanks everyone, I hadn't even really thought about the ending sound, but it's another nice variation, thanks again

In Russian it’s Ana sta SEEya.
