Oliver and Olivia

SPR1107 · 22/11/2018 22:22

DS1 middle name is Oliver. If No.2 is a girl, would it be odd to give the middle name Olivia?

I know middles names are not often used, but if we had a third, could it then make them feel left out?

I'm focusing on middle names, purely because first names are too hard!

I actually think it's quite sweet! Almost like a little family name. Lots of my family have either similar or same middle names - that goes for both sexes. Like you say they are barely used anyway.

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 22/11/2018 22:49

My middle name is Robyn, my brothers' is Robert. No one has ever commented in the fact we have similar'ish middle names.

glitterfarts · 22/11/2018 22:59

lol, slightly weird. If you have a 3rd, you'll have to continue it and have Olivier.

Shadow1234 · 22/11/2018 23:07

It wouldnt bother me tbh

ZebraKid71 · 22/11/2018 23:11

I think it's quite sweet, but if you have a third you'll have to continue the trend!

I know siblings named Olivia and Oliver, they go by Liv and Ollie but I still think it's ridiculous - as middle names though it is fine.

colouredwindmills · 22/11/2018 23:15

I know a family with twins Oliver and Olivia! Why would you??Hmm. As a middle name it’s fine.

stellarfox · 23/11/2018 07:22

It’s ok but I’d probably try to think of something else as it’s a bit samey!

Escolar · 23/11/2018 07:23

Fine as a middle name. Weird for first names!

strawberrypenguin · 23/11/2018 07:31

As middle names I think it's fine and a nice family link. Wouldn't as first names though!

bellinisurge · 23/11/2018 07:33

Despite it apparently being the most popular set of names, no kids in my DD's class with either name. Maybe one or two in a secondary school of 400 that I know of.
Same numbers at primary (comparatively)

Winterwonderland12 · 23/11/2018 07:56

It's very unimaginative. We gave our kids family names with (for us) lots of meaning.

Also, what if you have a third child?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/11/2018 09:02

It's fine imo.

ReginaPhalange89 · 23/11/2018 12:57

I thought this was going to be about siblings first names... Absolute no no. But middle names is totally fine. No one will even bat an eye lid, how often are middle names even used ?

Ohyesiam · 23/11/2018 12:59

You could do olive as a middle name for a thirdSmile

ZebraKid71 · 23/11/2018 13:53

Also, my siblings and I all have the same middle name (there's a slight a spelling change between male and female think alexandra/Alexander) and now some of us are married and we no longer have the same last name it is a nice link for us.

SPR1107 · 23/11/2018 17:06

I thought about it being a nice link, and true there is Olive if we were to have a third.

It's a compromise because DH wants Olivia as a first name, but we know at least 7 variants of it.

I say compromise.. haven't picked a first name yet. I just know it can't be Olivia with the amount we know!

It’s a middle name, it’s fine

I know someone who’s two sons have the same middle name, which is slightly odd imo but it doesn’t really matter, it’s just a random fact kind of thing.

Most of the people they will know in their lives will have absolutely no need to know their siblings middle name. I know my best friends sister quite well, but I couldn’t tell you her middle name!

MikeUniformMike · 24/11/2018 15:24

It's fine. If you spell use Livia or Alyvia or something it will look silly.

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 15:25

It's fine. No one except you and your partner will ever know what their middle names are anyway.

Astronica · 26/11/2018 09:53

It's absolutely fine.
