To hyphenate or not? Josy Rita

We have just found out we are having a baby girl and have decided on the name Josy Rita after both our maternal grandmothers.

But we can't decide whether to have Josy (first name) and Rita (middle name) or to go Josy-Rita (first name) with no middle name??

Don't hyphenate, it doesn't really work.

Bouchie · 20/11/2018 21:22

Oh use josette. Such a beautiful name.

Frlrlrubert · 20/11/2018 21:22

Ah, I didn't realise it was French, I take it back, but still no hyphen.

(my 'real names' hang up would still require 'Josette', which is a lovely name),

RiverTam · 20/11/2018 21:24

Don’t hyphenate.

However, whilst I can see that you want to honour your French grandmother if your child is going to be growing up here, then I would use the more usual English spelling of Josie, otherwise she will spend her life having to correct it - and believe me, it gets very old very quickly. If it didn’t have a known English equivalent I wouldn’t say this but as it does, I would.

LeeMiller · 20/11/2018 21:28

Don't hyphenate. Josy is nice but Josette is even prettier.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 20/11/2018 21:29

I love the name Josette! I'd name her Josette Rita and use Josy as a nickname.

HauntedPencil · 20/11/2018 21:32

No hyphen

LEMtheoriginal · 20/11/2018 21:36

Yes josette is pretty. Hiw would you pronounce josy?

IHeartKingThistle · 20/11/2018 21:38

I like it. I don't really get this 'lifetime of correcting it' thing. I teach secondary and have loads of alternative spellings including 3 different versions of Kayleigh, 3 different spellings of Kayden, 2 different spellings of Chelsea and a Milly spelled Mileigh. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at Josy.

thejustine · 20/11/2018 21:40

@LEMtheoriginal The French (proper) pronunciation would be Jo-zee but I expect most people will pronounce just like Josie or rhyming with Cosy which is how I say Josie anyway.

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs I hadn't really thought of doing that :) good job I have until April to decide!

MrsBungle · 20/11/2018 21:41

Josette is lovely. No hyphen.

thejustine · 20/11/2018 21:42

@IHeartKingThistle I don't get it either!
My name is Justine which I don't even think is weird and yet I get called Justin probably once a week! It doesn't bother me at all, if people pronounce it wrong then so be it, move on with your day.

@thejustine I do make a point of making sure I have names right though. I do think people who repeatedly get names wrong are rude really!

Polkapjs · 20/11/2018 22:44

Josette is just lovely and then the abbreviated version if you use it can be spelled however you wish.

Goostacean · 20/11/2018 22:53

No hyphen, but agree that Josette Rita (known as Josy) is better Smile

NoBirthdayHugs · 20/11/2018 22:56

For some reason Jody Rita doesn’t quite flow for me. Or maybe it flows a bit too much and sounds like one word ‘Josirita’ which reminds me of a biscuit brand or something.

Josette is beautiful so I would go for the full name Josette Rita and have Josy as the nickname.

ZebraKid71 · 20/11/2018 23:00

Josette is gorgeous. I've never heard it before

Josette Rita, no hyphen, Josy for short.

Sophronia · 20/11/2018 23:00

Josette Rita “Josy”

MrBirlingsAwfulWife · 20/11/2018 23:05

Another vote for Josette Rita. Lovely name.

lazymare · 20/11/2018 23:10

Josette is lovely

sweetkitty · 20/11/2018 23:12

As someone who has a hyphenated name don’t do it. Some online forms still hate hyphens.

Another vote for Josette Rita

DuckofDoom · 21/11/2018 00:27

Josette is beautiful! I knew a Dutch woman called Josette and she was lovely so it has only good connotations for me

hoping2018 · 21/11/2018 07:49

Another vote for Josette Rita here too. Lovely name, obviously french abd avoids the spelling dilemma.

Icklepup · 21/11/2018 11:16

Josette Rita.. no hyphen
