William if maiden name Williams?

Wondering about calling my son William but my maiden name is Williams and I haven’t taken my husband’s name (I’m still Williams). He would have my husband’s surname so wouldn’t be William Williams but is it still odd?

If he is going to have a different surname then why not? Even if he did have Williams as a surname then I think Will /Bill/Billy Williams still sounds ok although the full William Willams does not sound quite right

I think it's nice, it means he's kind of named after you/your family! Very traditional thing to do in some parts.

My maiden name was Williams, I still use it in work. My DS’s middle name is William and it was very nearly his first name.

My father was nearly called William Williams, it’s quite traditional in the part of South Wales where I am from. You see lots of Evan Evans, James James etc. Apparently my grandmother hated this idea and wanted a different name for him so she waited until the last legal day to register my father’s name and then went on her own, picked the name she wanted and added in her husbands first name as my fathers middle name to sweeten the blow.

This is actually a thing in the US, I know a few people who have given their child their maiden name as a first name. E.g I know a Jane Hunter who married and became Jane Smith and called her child Hunter Smith to honor her maiden name.

Santaispolishinghissleigh · 19/11/2018 11:52

Me and ds have dh's first name as a surname!

TokyoSushi · 19/11/2018 11:53

I think it's nice, go for it!

Flamingosnbears · 19/11/2018 13:58

Not odd if he's not having the surname if he was Wilfred may be a better name to break it up a bit.

Daisydukes79 · 19/11/2018 14:03

MY mum used her maiden name for one of my brother’s first name and it has worked really well. Go for it

TwittleBee · 19/11/2018 14:11

oh my effing god I actually know someone called William Williams btw OP He was called Billy when we were growing up but is now known as Will

TheWiseWomansFear · 19/11/2018 16:37

Just call him Billy Twice

SweetheartNeckline · 19/11/2018 16:43

We're considering doing similar although I have DH's surname now.

A school friend called her son Daniel when her maiden name is Daniels, I saw her some years later and my initial thought was "Ooh, Daniel Daniels?!" Took me a few seconds to work out, I didn't pass comment and then I thought it was actually quite a nice thing to do!

daisypond · 19/11/2018 16:58

It's fine. I think it's rather nice.

PetraRabbit · 19/11/2018 21:44

PetraRabbit · 19/11/2018 21:45

Wombat222 · 20/11/2018 07:39

no problem IMO - am also from a S Wales family and my great grandfather was a William Williams!

CrookedMe · 20/11/2018 12:28

My friend's surname is Innes, and her son is named Innes. It's a nice link for her.

spiderlight · 20/11/2018 12:37

I nearly did this - think it would be fine.

newtothisriver · 20/11/2018 12:39

He wouldn't be willing Williams so what would be odd?

Fibbertigibbet · 20/11/2018 19:29

I think it's fine. He's not William Williams, and it's a lovely little nod to your side of the family and his heritage. Do it!

LexieLoos · 20/11/2018 19:41

Another S Wales family here, with a William Williams a couple of generations back.
My mum’s maiden name is Williams and I’m also thinking of using it as first name.
If you think about it, most people he encounters throughout his life won’t actually know your maiden name anyway

Wombat222 · 20/11/2018 20:06

Very true LexieLoos
