Does a 2 syllable 1st name NEED a longer middle name?

BF has suggested Hugo for a boy which I mulled over and quite like (we both find boys names really difficult to choose).

But middle name is 90% going to be a family name which is only 1 syllable.

So my quandary is while after the first introduction of “we’ve had a boy and he’s called xxxx yyy”, I know middle names hardly ever get used but would it sound odd to have 2 short names?

Feel free whether you love / hate / indifferent to Hugo too 😄😉

With a middle name it’s pretty mind ch just the family and the tax office who ever know about it, so it doesn’t matter. Just pick names you like.

Would sound fine I think, depending on the name. Think of all the Sarah Janes!

MimiSunshine · 17/11/2018 09:13

@AliCanTea that is a good point. The middle name is also 4 letters long so I think that’s why I’m wondering if it would be an odd choice

Hugo Jack
Hugo John
Hugo James

Sounds fine to me.

As long as the 4 letters aren't B O S S :)

I know a David Neil (older obviously) and that seems fine. Maybe it's the sound of the name not the length that's throwing you off?

The answer to your OP is: “no of course not”.

Hugo is a nice name, I also love Hugh.

Middle names are rarely heard.

Boss 😂 definitely not.

I think what’s giving me pause is that I was only really considering and then discounting longer names (DD has a long 1st name) so I’m also wondering if it’s like having an ‘Alexandrina’ (not DDs name) and a ‘Sam’ to give an extreme scenario

It's fine, I'd say.

No, I don’t think so because “Hugo” has a nice weight to it. A nice 19th century novel feel about it.

If you like the name you are somewhat overthinking this.

If it’s because you aren’t really sure about the name keep looking.

My dd has a 3 syllable first name and my ds is 1, never gave it a second thought. We chose their names because we loved them.

nocluenoidea · 17/11/2018 20:37

1 syllable names are the best option imo as they flow much better to the surname

nocluenoidea · 17/11/2018 20:38

I should say, 1 syllable middle names
