We love ‘out there’ names with a historical/classical ilk.

We love ‘Juno’ but wondered if anyone else had any more suggestions?

Calliope (Greek muse of poetry). I've always loved it since I read the sandman comics many years ago.

Most well-known Greek female names come with a story with a sad ending, so here are the few I can think of with less-tragic fates:

Ariadne - helped Theseus to escape from the labyrinth only to be abandoned by him in an island, but then hooked up with Dionysus (god of wine) and can only imagine had a high old time of it for the rest of her days
Athene/a - goddess of wisdom, winning, war and crafts - grumpy virgin goddess but likes to win and usually did
Penelope - took passive-aggressive to new levels and held the line for ten years waiting for Odysseus to return home; v clever
Calypso - fun times, mostly; a nymph
Psyche - became the lover of Eros (Cupid in his adult form) and also the forerunner of the Miller's daughter in Rumpstiltskin, doing impossible tasks before daybreak.

That's really all I can think of. All the really great names had quite tragic outcomes, ripe for feminist revisions.

Cassandra (Cassie)
Hero
Helen
Perdita

Oops, Juno obviously the Roman version. Similarly rough outcomes for Roman females, sadly.

Caroline nn Caro
Athene (Ath-ee-nay)
Danae (pronunciation varies)
Artemis

I second Hero, I think it’s a beautiful name.

Eris

Don't do It! Unless your child will be cosseted in a private schooled setting or avant garde social network it'll sound too 'trying'. My Dd's step brother has a 'classical/literature' name, and frankly everyone rolls their eyes or says 'Oooh, that's an interesting name 🤔!'. No one wants to really be 'that child'. 'Juno' is nice but it's essentially naming your child after a pretty recent teenage pregnancy film.

Minerva (Minnie for short). I know you might laugh, but “Judith” is a really interesting name with loads of history and tough women owning it. It’s become cool for me now, just because I know it has a dark past; Judith cutting off the head of Holofernes.

Most posters here consider Juno a classical feminine name. I know why obviously, but going by the type of people I've seen use it, I see it differently, as a bit of a unisex hipster name, so I'd avoid names like Cassandra and Celestia as they are so, so much more girly. I think Dido would be perfect you could get over the singer connotation (personally it wouldn't bother me). And Isis is beautiful- a shame it got ruined. Zoe? Phoebe? Agnes? Leto?

SumAndSubstance · 15/11/2018 16:00

I like Daphne as a usable Classical name. I also like Cassandra (bit too tragic?) and Camilla (awesome lass, but name now too associated with Charles?)

bridgetreilly · 16/11/2018 09:43

Hebe
Phoebe
Phaedra
Ianthe
Xanthe

@FlyingMonkeys rude Hmm

FlyingMonkeys · 16/11/2018 12:55

Fashinista101 Nope not intentially being rude to OP. It's just my view and obviously that's my perspective not OP's. Juno is a lovely name but does remind me of the film. Some of the names in the thread are gorgeous but I'd personally be wary of a name that could lead to having to spell it constantly. It also opens up to people using a nn the OP might despise.

Eleanor90 · 16/11/2018 13:11

Gaia! The Greek Earth goddess. I love it but wasn’t allowed it Angry
