Finlay (Finn) or Arthur

Baby is 5 weeks old and have to make a decision!! Have looked at every baby name under the sun and down to these two. Finlay bothers me because so many spellings and pronunciations (I know it’s Fin-lee but our friends and family don’t seem to) and Arthur bothers me as worried it’s a bit old-man ish. Other front runners were Henry, Isaac and Fred but we’ve narrowed to these two. What do you guys think?!

I prefer Finlay (any spelling) over Arthur. My family mispronounce (due to accent) and often misspell my dd's name. It's annoying but hey Ho.

NC4Now · 05/11/2018 09:28

Finlay is a lovely name. Could you use Finlay Arthur?

Santaisgettingbusy · 05/11/2018 09:29

I have a Fynn....

CreativeMumma · 05/11/2018 09:38

i love Arthur! do you have a middle name? how about Arthur Henry?

Wombat222 · 05/11/2018 09:45

Thanks! If we choose Arthur, we’d prob do Arthur Finlay so that kept both names there! V aware that the older generation aren’t so keen on these older traditional names which is frustrating - my mum hates Arthur!

I've got an Arthur he's 6 now and it really suits him, he couldn't be anything else now, my family hated it when we said what his name was after he was born but soon realised he was just an Arthur

Wombat222 · 05/11/2018 11:51

I’m hoping my family would come around too!

Also does he get any nicknames?

Farty Arty springs to mind - sorry!!

Wombat222 · 05/11/2018 12:12

Yes this was one of my concerns! Tho guess you can do something with most names!

What about Flynn? I much prefer it to Finlay.

If it’s just a choice between Arthur & Finlay? I’d pick Arthur.

Wombat222 · 05/11/2018 12:26

Hmm not keen on Flynn unfortunately!

Finlay is nice. Spell it Finley which is the most common spelling anyway and then you avoid pronunciation issues.

Wombat222 · 05/11/2018 12:44

Think we’d stick with Finlay as the proper Scottish spelling but it does cause issues! Wish I could think of an alternative name but I’ve literally considered everything!

Finley/Finlay feels quite trendy and may start to sound dated as it falls out of fashion.

Arthur is more classic but I'm not keen on Art as it's too close to Fart.

How about Quinn or Angus?

2128Cl · 05/11/2018 14:12

I like Finlay. I always thought it was spelt Finley though. I'm a big fan of Finn as a stand-alone name!!

Glumglowworm · 05/11/2018 14:28

I much prefer Arthur to Finlay of any spelling, and I’m not normally a big fan of the old man type names but I do really like Arthur

Wombat222 · 05/11/2018 14:30

Hmm yes all this spelling stuff is my concern - just so confusing. In Scotland it can be Findlay/Findley too

Arthur as first...

Shadow1234 · 05/11/2018 16:10

Prefer Finlay

Didyeeaye · 05/11/2018 16:43

I think Arthur Finlay is lovely and flows very well. Art or Artie is an adorable name! I'm sure your mum will come around

MummaToMonsters · 05/11/2018 16:46

Finley

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 05/11/2018 16:47

Much prefer Arthur in fact I love it.
Arthur Finley is fabulous!

Wombat222 · 05/11/2018 16:55

I like you :). Ha! You don’t think Arty Farty is nickname risk too much? It could happen I guess but prob not enough reason to discount

I think Finley/Finlay Aurthur sounds lovely.
