My baby years are over, but I've been thinking, after watching history programmes, why don't people use old English names anymore. Ealdwine,Athelstan, Albert ch, Etheldreda all brilliant names, don't you think?

Nope, I hate old people names. Totally don't get it as a trend.

sonlypuppyfat · 03/11/2018 16:16

Ok then Hmm

I like Etheldreda (but I do have unconventional tastes Hmm )

I don't see why they shouldn't make a very delayed comeback, they're more sensible than some other names you hear!

AliCanTea · 03/11/2018 16:43

I think they're coming back! My favourite is Holm for a boy. And CrookedMe must know some suuuuper old people Grin

sonlypuppyfat · 03/11/2018 16:44

That's what I thought!

If you mean Old English/Anglo-Saxon names, then I agree, OP. There are some lovely ones that could work very well today, such as Alviva, Alta, Ediva, Engelith, Elvey, Nerienda.

Boys are a bit tougher, but Eustan, Godwin, Aldo, Guy, Hemming, Maynard etc, might work.

DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2018 16:46

Emma is an old English name still in popular use. It's one of the reasons I like it.

sonlypuppyfat · 03/11/2018 16:46

See, you're getting it!

I knew a Hereward, which is still one of my favourite names ever.

sonlypuppyfat · 03/11/2018 20:47

That's a cool name

I've come across so many Alberts in the past 5 years. Most shorten it to Albie but there's been one in almost every baby/toddler/preschool group I've been to since having my first dd 5 years ago. Maybe those names are coming back.

haistbabymama · 03/11/2018 21:01

Which name do you like?Fraser or Wren

sonlypuppyfat · 03/11/2018 22:09

The Albert was an autocorrect for some unpronounceable name I found !

I'm not keen on the ones you've mentioned but old names do seem to be coming back!

Chewbecca · 03/11/2018 22:33

Osbert is due a comeback I think.

Ethelswith · 03/11/2018 22:40

Aethelstan for a boy

Sæxwyn for a girl

CrookedMe · 03/11/2018 22:41

God, sorry, I thought you asked for opinions

AuntieStella · 03/11/2018 22:41

Not as old as Old English, but I'd love to see Berengaria make a comeback

ZebraKid71 · 04/11/2018 10:12

My dh has tried suggesting a load of these old anglo saxon names! He's favourite is Athelstan. I'm not a fan really.

yesmelord · 04/11/2018 10:30

I'm pregnant with DC2 and I have actually looked into these kinds of names for if I was to have a daughter. I've looked at other time periods names too.

Not found one I've fallen in love with yet though!

sonlypuppyfat · 04/11/2018 20:16

I think they are great stong names

OP posts:
IStandWithPosie · 04/11/2018 20:19

I’ve often wondered when these names will make a comeback. Some of them are fantastic names and deserve to be used. My son has a really old name dating back to the 6th century.

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/11/2018 20:24

Theowen is a good name. Also Anglo-Saxon.

itssquidstella · 04/11/2018 20:26

Hereward and Alaric are great names. I'm also a big fan of Godfrey, for that mediaeval knight vibe 😆

manicinsomniac · 04/11/2018 22:34

As long as Cnut doesn't experience a revival!
