I really like Tadgh, have met two little Tadgh's recently (not in Ireland!)

Caoimhe is what my 30 year old Irish friends are called.

siofra is lovely.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 03/11/2018 11:22

Not too keen on Carraig, but I love the others. Are you in Ireland? If not just be prepared to have a nemonic for pronunciation (eg my friend used to introduce herself in the UK as "Parade with an M")

Leela96 · 03/11/2018 11:39

We are in Ireland, with lots of Irish names around .

I like Caoimhe but DH is afraid there will be lots of Caoimhe's as its very popular.

DH loves Carraig but I think he would end up being called rocky

Pronunciations?

RavenWings · 03/11/2018 11:47

Oh what a shame. I thought we were on the internet, which you could use to google pronunciations...clearly not.

OP I like Tadhg, Aodhan and Iarlaith. For girls I like Aodhamair and Siofra. I'm not gone on Orfhlaith, I always thought the spelling was a bit much but I think Orlaith is quite pretty looking.

I don't like Carraig and Caoimhes are ten a penny ime. I'd go for Aodhan and Siofra.

mikado1 · 03/11/2018 11:48

Prefer Iarla to your sp and also prefer it to Aodhàn. Love Síofra, also Saorla. Prefer Aedammair spelling, beautiful sounding name. How about Siún, Fiadh?

Conall and Darragh nice too. Cillian, Cormac, Conor.

MyOtherProfile · 03/11/2018 11:53

Oh you're so funny.

No if only you could get accurate pronunciation consistently on Google.

mikado1 · 03/11/2018 12:22

Ear-la
Sheef-ra
Ay-du-mar
Ay-thawn
Quee-va

Thankyou Mikado1
@ RavenWings - you clearly remembered to take your "sarcastic" pills today.

DS was nearly Iarla, which I love. Not keen on Carraig, which just sounds too townland-y to me. Tadhg is lovely, as is Síofra, and I like Aodhamair, too.

I've lived mostly in England since the 90s, and have a comparatively unfamiliar Irish first and surname -- DS has an unusual Irish name, my Irish surname and DH's Irish surname. I have never in over 20 years felt the need to introduce myself with a mnemonic, in England or any of the other places I've lived in the US, Europe or the ME. No, most people won't know how to pronounce them until they are told, but they manage, as we all do when we're faced with an unfamiliar term.

RavenWings · 03/11/2018 12:55

Yes, god forbid that on a forum for giving opinions on baby names I'd be using I. What a mind boggling thought that one must be to you. 😂😂😂

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 03/11/2018 13:19

@ RavenWings
Everyone, including Google, has different ideas of pronunciations.
A simple question - met by rudeness/sarcasm.
However, if you read my 12.29 post again - you'll find you're not as smart and clever as you obviously think WinkWinkWink

Janleverton · 03/11/2018 13:22

Love siofra and tadgh. FWIW I am English and capable of pronouncing both, having come across them before. You hear it once, job’s a good’un.

noseoftralee · 03/11/2018 13:25

Carriag??? I’ve never heard of that as a name. Absolutely he’d be called Rocky

Leela96 · 03/11/2018 16:28

We have meet 2 Carraig's, DH thinks its a strong name - no pun intended . But I think once kids Know it mean rock , they nickname rocky would be used

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 03/11/2018 16:36

I’d personally stay away from Síofra due to the meaning- fairies in Irish folklore aren’t exactly Tinkerbell, they’re much more malevolent.

Love Caoimhe but it was v popular in the early-mid 90s, so might start to date soon- any I know are in their early 20s.

Love love love Tadhg- we’re using it as DS’s middle name.

Carraig just makes me think of Carraig Donn (the shop)

SparkyBlue · 03/11/2018 16:40

I definitely wouldn't use Carraig. Half the housing estates built in the last fifteen years are Carraig something or other 😀😀😀

DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2018 16:44

Not Carraig, for the reasons Sparky said.

I like Tadhg & it's not particularly popular.

I know loads of Caoimhes but very few Siofras so that gets my vote.

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2018 17:44

Traidisiúnta
An raibh tú ag an gCarraig?
nó a' bhfaca tú féin mó grá
nó a' bhfaca tú gile,
finne agus scéimh na mná?
Nó a' bhfaca tú t-úll
ba chumhra is ba mhilse bláth?
nó a' bhfaca tú mo Vailintín
Nó a' bhfuil sí á cloí mar táim.
Ó bhí mé ag an gCarraig,
is chonaic mé mé féin dó grá
Ó chonaic mé gile
finne agus scéimh na mná
Ó chonaic mé an t-ull
ba chumhra is ba mhilse bláth
Agus chonaic mé do Vailintín
agus ní sí á cloí mar 'láir.
I wouldn't use Carraig because of this dreary poem we had to learn.

Raydan · 03/11/2018 22:56

I like Tadhg, Caoimhe and Siofra. Not keen on any of the other suggestions, especially Carraig for all the reasons given by PP.

mathanxiety · 04/11/2018 07:55

Síofra and Tadhg get my vote.

Love Aodhamair too.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 04/11/2018 15:26

Grin At Caoimhe being a 30 year old name - I’m 30 and it was the most common name in my year at school. It’s a lovely name.

Babies I know with Irish names born recently include Oisin x2, Cillian, Aodhan, Maebh.

kenandbarbie · 04/11/2018 15:41

Carraig reminds me too much of the shop too. I like all your other choices!

harrietm87 · 04/11/2018 16:04

I like all your alternatives more than the ones in the thread title. Iarla and Aodhamair are awesome.
