It's surprised me how much I like this name. What do you think of it?

Affected unless you are French.
Sounds like Bleugh
There was one at school. The boys called her "flirt"

Flora would be much nicer

Shadow1234 · 02/11/2018 14:02

I think its an ok name, but wouldnt use it myself.

SunflowerSally · 02/11/2018 16:01

I think it's lovely. If you like it go for it. So long as your surname doesn't begin with a vowel I think. Otherwise great.

Pennina · 02/11/2018 16:03

Lovely!!

daisypond · 02/11/2018 16:17

I like it. I don't think it's the least bit affected. It's been used in non-French speaking countries, in fact, across Europe, for decades/centuries. I think of Fleur Adcock the poet.

SumAndSubstance · 02/11/2018 18:08

I think it's one of the few words that sounds much uglier in French. It's just a horrible sound. Flora is nicer.

Cosmoa · 02/11/2018 18:10

In my experience It's just not a great name when said in the many accents in the UK (presuming that's where you are from).. And I agree it kinda sounds like bleugh/blur.

PinkCalluna · 02/11/2018 18:11

I think it’s a pretty name but unfortunately, like Claire, doesn’t work well with many English accents.

Flora is lovely as an alternative.

Cosmoa · 02/11/2018 18:11

I have a friend called Flor from Argentina.. Full name is Florencia, which is much prettier! Its a nicer version of Fleur and Florence imo.

Cherries101 · 02/11/2018 18:11

It’s too Harry Potter for me, but maybe I’m from the wrong generation.

ElizabethMainwaring · 02/11/2018 18:15

Re: Fleur. It looks gorgeous as a word, and it's meaning is beautiful. But it sounds awful: insipid and unfinished. This is why it isn't a popular name. Flora is lovely, but unfortunately, to most, including me, it is a margarine brand.

TwitterQueen1 · 02/11/2018 18:19

I think it's lovely but then I'm forever imprinted by The Forsyte Saga where Fleur was played by Susan Hampshire, who was and still is beautiful. And I love Jolyon too, if you should have a boy (just a suggestion Wink.

However, I do take the point made by ^ posters about the sound of it today. I'm not sure people would appreciate how lovely it is...

daisypond · 02/11/2018 18:19

I don't see why it's too Harry Potter. It's just a normal name. Like Harry.

beanaseireann · 02/11/2018 18:26

My sentiments exactly.
Fleur looks lovely as a word but when you say it, it's an ugly sound.
I don't like Flora either though.
Floralie is nice.

Hohofortherobbers · 02/11/2018 18:48

I like it, would have considered it myself but our surname would have made it sound like a stutter. Try saying it with a surname beginning with f......

SuperstarDJ · 02/11/2018 20:01

I like it to look at as a word but hate how it sounds when said out loud.
