Nigerian Names

Hello!

DP is of Nigerian heritage and I'm white British. I'd really like to have a Nigerian name within baby's name, either as a first name or as a middle name to link back to baby's heritage. His tribe is Yoruba.

If it's a first name, I'd like something that's not too complicated to announce, eg Kemi, Eniola etc.

I just wondered if any of you could share with me any Nigerian names (and their meanings if possible, but I can google if not), so I can have a go of rolling some off my tongue to see how they sound.

Thank you 💜

Imole - means light
adebola - means wealth (I think)

Idris! Both Welsh and Arabic!

My friend is half Nigerian and considered Charles, nn Chuck which apparently is a name in Yoruba

And I went to school with boys named
Chiduzie nn Dozy
Olufemi nn Femi
Oluwagbenga nn Benga

There's an Adebola in DS1's class, nn Addy

Thank you! I absolutely adore Idris but after naming my car Idris, and him agreeing on Luther as a middle name, I may be pushing it with my love for Mr Elba 🤣

Thank you for these suggestions. Such beautiful names! Adebola is lovely. DP loves Ayotide which is cute, Tide (tee-dee) for short.

I know a Masimba, which inevitably gets shortened to Simba, but he likes both!

JingsMahBucket · 01/11/2018 14:52

What tribe is your DP?

TokenGinger · 01/11/2018 14:58

@JingsMahBucket - He's Yoruba x

I have nothing to contribute except I think Aramide is so pretty!

Brickswithstones · 01/11/2018 18:18

OP, are you after names for boys or girls or those that can be used by either ?
I know you want names that are easy to pronounce, but you might want to consider the meanings behind each name as they may be specific to certain scenarios e.g tunde will be in remembrance of a late male member of the family etc

PurestGreen · 01/11/2018 18:22

I used to know an Ayotide, he was known as Ayo. He was LOVELY. I think he was Yoruba as well...

JingsMahBucket · 01/11/2018 18:34

@TokenGinger I’m so sorry I completely missed that. Egg on my face.

As for a girl’s name, I’ve always liked Adenike and know people with that. It can work either as Ade or Nike.

Toni

@Brickswithstones I'm looking for boys and girls names as we're not sure what we are having just yet. I definitely agree with meanings of names. That's really important to him. Xx

I think Ayotide is definitely high on our list. That's a strong contender for him. It is a lovely name :)

I know a Femi (Male) and that's always seemed like a really cool name
