Hayden or Haydn?

Hello, we are set on the name Hayden/Haydn for our son, but we are struggling with the spelling. I know Haydn was the composer, but it was also pronounced different. However, I know a 22 year old Haydn and it's pronounced Hayden... I'm not sure which one is best.

Hayden.

Haydn was the composer's surname.

I prefer Hayden. The other spelling always looks a bit wrong to me.
Lovely name btw!

Hayden

Keep the 'e' - Hayden

For gods sake, don't burden the poor child with forever having to spell his name. Hayden.

Jozen · 28/10/2018 02:46

That's funny because I know quite a few Haydns but only one Hayden.
I prefer Haydn but I guess that's because it's more familiar to me.

DBro's name is Haydn. No end of trouble with spelling it out.
I like it better than Hayden, though. The 'e' just feels excessive.

(I also got the short end of the 'spellable name' stick, sucks to be us)

Bloodyfucksake · 28/10/2018 04:27

Are you naming him because you love the music of Joseph Haydn though? Or you just like the name Hayden?

RedDwarves · 28/10/2018 04:56

Well, I would not pronounce Haydn like Hayden, because they are pronounced differently - knowing someone who pronounces it Hayden doesn't change that.

Use Haydn and the correct pronunciation if you are naming your son after the composer.

Use Hayden otherwise.

Haydn is pronounced HY-den, though. Or anyone who has a nodding acquaintance with Austrian classical music will assume so.
