What does everyone think of this name for a boy? I love it - especially as I've always loved Bon Iver, the singer!

So you are going to pronounce it...eeever...is that right?

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2018 23:20

I assume you mean Ivor?

It's not great, either way.

AuntieStella · 23/10/2018 23:21

When spelt Ivor, it's fine.

This spelling will, I think, cause a great deal of confusion and lead to a lifetime of 'no, with an 'e': no, not e-v-o-r, other vowel i-v-e-r: got it now?'

M0gg · 23/10/2018 23:21

The Iver in Bon Iver is pronounced Ee-vare.

Unless that's how you want to pronounce it, you would normally spell it Ivor.

Ariela · 23/10/2018 23:22

If there's ever any possibility if him living in or near Slough/Heathrow, DO NOT under any circumstances call him Iver. It's a nice village with a big industrial estate overshadowed by the M25.

Ivor on the other hand is fine (especially if you like railway engines)

M0gg · 23/10/2018 23:23

And Bon Iver is a band Smile

RancidOldHag · 23/10/2018 23:25

I'm not sure it's a good idea to saddle a boy with a name to be pronounced 'eevare' at a time when every other girl is called that (spelt Eva) - in some accents the stress pattern will vary a bit, but in others it will be the same.

DC2018 · 23/10/2018 23:30

Ivor and Ivar are nice but not sure how to pronounce Iver?

SuperstarDJ · 24/10/2018 01:38

I like Ivor & Ivan. Calling a child Iver is just setting him up for a lifetime of having to correct people on how to spell/pronounce his name and saying ‘No, not Ivor...’

Topseyt · 24/10/2018 02:57

I would spell it Ivor. Then I think it is nice.

userdswe · 24/10/2018 03:08

My son is Terence Stephen Ivor

Dad's name, grandad's name and great grandad's name ❤️ He's TJ for short (Terence Junior).

You spell it how you'd like too 🥰

OwlBeThere · 24/10/2018 03:13

i like Ivor. i agree Iver pronouced the way the band is might mean you spent a long time correcting people.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 24/10/2018 03:26

Stick with Ivor.

VenusInSpurs · 24/10/2018 06:17

Don’t do it if your surname is Biggin.

AdoreTheBeach · 24/10/2018 06:49

Years ago I had a work colleague Iver. He was a nice chap, can’t remember where from, but nice enough so when I saw your question, thought, yes - nice name.

Do know people will misspell and mispronounce it. You’ll need to be prepared for that and accept you’ll be regularly correcting people, as later will your DS.

I have a name that was unusual growing up (now it’s not as unusual). I grew up just accepting no one would pronounce my name right, accepting the weird pronunciations and actually joke that I’ll answer to anything. What often makes me annoyed though are documents, think driving licence, bank cards etc coming with wrong spelling so where possible, I use title - initial - last name.

VenusInSpurs · 24/10/2018 08:54

Are you thinking Ivor, pronounced ‘I-vah ‘ or Iver pronounced Ee-vair?

I think the secjnd sounds weird if not in a French accent, and anyway comes from ‘hiver ‘ , winter. So is in itself a version of the ‘corrrct’ spelling.

If you want Ivor, spell Ivor, if you want Iver think v carefully about constant spelling and pronounciation corrections. It is SO wearing for a child to know it will happen every single time they meet someone new, walk into a room.

bridgetreilly · 24/10/2018 17:50

Ivor!

wildewillow · 24/10/2018 18:49

Ivor or Ivar (if you're Scandinavian) are great. Iver isn't spelt right.

MonkeyToucher · 26/10/2018 12:10

I’d assume you couldn’t spell Ivor...
