Sorry if I offend anyone but I just don't get it.

I've just seen these name spellings on Facebook....

Edythe and Alyvia. I'm assuming pronounced Edith and Olivia. Whhyyyy

I think you should join the Facebook group ‘Of all the beautiful names in the world, that’s the one you chose’. You’re in for a treat.

ReginaPhalange89 · 23/10/2018 14:52

Haha I'll have to look that up!

It's a show-offy world.

Yes, the spellings are awful and unnecessary. 'Chav' is not the connection that I would make. I know plenty of middle class parents who create 'new spellings' of traditional names.

Theweasleytwins · 23/10/2018 15:31

Ah I love younique spellings
Definitely joining that group

florascotia2 · 23/10/2018 15:42

Edythe is quite a long-established variant of Edith, quite popular in the 19th century, and is probably just as close as more modern Edith to the Anglo-Saxon origin of the name: Eadgyð (the final letter was pronounced 'th').

BloomsButtons · 23/10/2018 15:55

In the 'alternative' version of Twilight the author switches the sexes and Edward becomes Edythe. It's even worse than the original.

Awful Op

I had the displeasure of meeting a 3yo Iylah last week

I know a Natasher (she's in her twenties).

MarthasGinYard · 23/10/2018 16:09

I have young women come to work with me sometimes and I wonder if they're parents just didn't know the spellings

This season I've met a Jaid, kileigh and a Young man 'Lewk'

All British and wearing the name badges

Which of course I questioned

ReginaPhalange89 · 23/10/2018 16:10

'Their' parents

Best spelling karma ever. Grin

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/10/2018 16:13

I was just told of someone who names her child Female but pronounced it fermarlay!

MarthasGinYard · 23/10/2018 16:16

Quite Mrs TP

I'm just going to cringe back into my cave, and put Ryleigh and Feibee to bed.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/10/2018 16:20

Kiss little Jessieighkah from me.

MistressDeeCee · 23/10/2018 16:20

Not quite the same but at school last week a mum called out loudly to her son "Ex-hay-vi-aaaah, come here"

He has the same name as my dad - Xavier. Creole Caribbean sounds like 'Zavier'. DDs dad is Brazilian/Portuguese & they have variation of name but pronounced 'Javier' (very soft J').

I did feel like bit of a name snob tho. But I couldn't help it...just, No.

So I guess at times it's also pronunciation that parents don't know

MarthasGinYard · 23/10/2018 16:21

Pleasure 😆

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 23/10/2018 16:55

BlaaBlaaBlaa no that’s not true. It’s a common racist myth but there’s no evidence of it. There’s also no evidence for anyone called La-a (Ladasha) another one wheeled out to be offencive to African Americans.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 23/10/2018 16:55

Offensive*

EvieV28 · 23/10/2018 17:28

Edythe is ok!

SnuggyBuggy · 23/10/2018 17:30

I know it's snobby but I can't stand younique spellings of names

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 23/10/2018 17:34

Supposed to be Portia...
