Hello!!

So I have found out we are having a baby boy and I love both of the names, and I really can't decide which to go for?
So do you prefer Cillian or Connor, a bit of public feedback always helps me before deciding on a name!

Thanks!!

Definitely Conor - assuming it's spelt that way!

kenandbarbie · 22/10/2018 12:45

Both lovely strong names!

busymamakins1 · 22/10/2018 19:53

Thank you everyone, I'm definitely feeling Cillian a bit more 😍

Is Cillian pronounced Kill Ian?

EloisaJane · 22/10/2018 20:48

Cillian. Massive Cillian Murphy fan here.
It is a great name.

TheVeryHungryDieter · 22/10/2018 22:16

@MemoryOfSleep yes, it is pronounced Killian.

Silly-en would sound quite wrong.

finallychangedmyusername · 22/10/2018 22:19

Conor. Cillian has the word "kill" in it; I don't understand the appeal myself. Conor is lovely.

Clickncollect · 22/10/2018 22:21

I have a Conor although Cillian was one of my top five names when I was pregnant (husband is a born and bred Irishman but we live in England)

drspouse · 22/10/2018 22:23

I know a Cillian (well, I know his parents and have met him). I'm glad to have my mental spelling corrected as I did think it was a K Blush but I do like the name.
Parents are, indeed, Irish.

Yes but it’s another language so has a different meaning. It doesn’t mean kill.

BackforGood · 22/10/2018 22:32

I keep reading 'Gillian' as I know a few of those and haven't yet met a 'Cillian'.
So, from your two, I prefer Conor

TheVeryHungryDieter · 23/10/2018 00:13

"Cillian has 'kill' in it" must read as the most culturally insensitive thing I've read today. Top marks..

Actually in the Irish language the sound or prefix "kill" means "church", which is about as apposite as you can get from murder.

MorningsEleven · 23/10/2018 09:12

Cillian is not my cup of tea and it'll get trendy and naff. My BFF is called Conor though so I might be biased.

MemoryOfSleep · 23/10/2018 10:44

@theveryhungrydieter yes, it's another language, but that knowledge doesn't take away from the fact that for those who don't speak Irish, the name may have negative connotations. For example, I know someone with a name that's pronounced Shyster. Which, to me, is a not-very-nice slang term for someone unscrupulous. In their language, it means rose. Do I particularly like the name? No. But that's because it makes me think of the slang term. I also don't like the name Zoe because it makes me think of a school bully I knew. I don't think PP was being culturally insensitive, just supplying her own feelings about the name, which is what the OP asked for.

Sophronia · 24/10/2018 06:22

Cillian

BigBairyHollocks · 24/10/2018 06:35

Connor, far too many Cillians, and the ones I know are nothing short of crazy kids-their parents are pooped!

Sungura · 24/10/2018 06:36

Conor.

MajorArcana · 24/10/2018 06:56

Well, there are more Conors really, because a Conor could be 2 or 55.

Cillian, the age spread is largely under 20

TatianaLarina · 25/10/2018 12:58

The problem with naming kids after celebrities or celebrities children is that it then dates horribly.

Cillian is set to be the new Liam. Which is a shame as they’re both nice Irish names.

MajorArcana · 27/10/2018 00:48

What does that even mean! James is the new John, which is a shame as they're both nice English names.

busymamakins1 · 27/10/2018 09:19

Whoosh over your head.

Around the time of Oasis onwards Liam’s popularity rocketed in the U.K. and US. (Perhaps equally influenced by Liam Neeson). So there’s a whole generation with loads of Liams. In the US it’s still the no.1 most popular name, whereas in the U.K. it has fallen so it feels a bit dated here.

Cillian seems set to follow the same trajectory.

All of which is a shame as both Liam and Cillian were orginally nice Irish names.

MajorArcana · 27/10/2018 11:17

Ok. Perception. Liam could not be less of a celebrity name to my ear.

ismellsnow · 27/10/2018 11:19

Cillian, it's gorgeous.

BruegelTheElder · 27/10/2018 11:36

Who is the celebrity Cillian that everyone is naming their children after?
