Hello fellow mumsnetters!

Our lovely little man was born 4 weeks ago and we’re desperately struggling to decide on a name as we need to register him soon. We’ve been looking for names that work across cultures as I’m Indian and my husband is English and so far the frontrunner seems to be Zubin. However, we are a bit worried about him being teased at school with the ‘bin’ bit. Would love to know your thoughts and/or suggestions for any other crossover Anglo/Indian names. Thanks :)

Lovely name. He will most likely be called Zub for short by others though. If it was Zuben, he might get called Ben?

Devesh
Kiran
Ashwin
Jovan
Ravi
Rohan
Shaan
Samir

I don't think Zubin would get shortened. Nor is it tease worthy. Good name imo!

ReginaPhalange89 · 19/10/2018 08:15

I've never heard of Zubin before, don't see any issues with it ! I wouldn't worry about the bin part honestly , kids tease about all sorts of silly things we can't control. They can pick fault with any name really ! If that's your favourite go for it

Eleanor90 · 19/10/2018 09:05

I think it’s a great name!

thighofrelief · 19/10/2018 09:09

I know a Krish with the same background.

LeeMiller · 19/10/2018 09:38

Zubin is nice. I was at school with two Robins and they weren't teased for having 'bin' in their name.

ChaosMoon · 19/10/2018 09:42

People will find a way to tease any name if they really want to.

DH said that his group of friends bonded over making up silly names for each other. No nastiness involved and he's still friends with the same guys at 36. My name could be turned into Fanny with very little imagination. Only ever happened once though. I made a silly name our of theirs, we both laughed and moved on.

It made me wonder if what we really need is to teach our kids how to take things less seriously.

Whether you agree with that or not, I don't think there are any truly "safe" names and there are much worse nicknames than Bin. Which may never be used anyway.

Zubin is a beautiful name. If you like it, go for it.

Really like Zubin! As a former teacher, I’d say it’s a really good cross-cultural choice - easy to spell and pronounce, no unfortunate connotations etc. And kids are much more accepting of difference these days - I’ve taught quite a few with names that really didn’t ‘work’ in a English and none of them were teased for this reason. In fact, it was actually those with names like Ellie (‘Smelly’) and Lucas (‘Mucus’) that got the teasing! Smile

Lovely

raviolidreaming · 20/10/2018 09:20

I really like Zubin. I know a Robin and a Rubin and, as far as I know, neither of them have ever been called 'bin' or teased about that part of their name.

starkid · 20/10/2018 13:27

I like Zubin :)

Reaa · 20/10/2018 13:30

I like Zubin but as a previous poster said Zuben will be better shorten to Ben.

DerelictWreck · 20/10/2018 13:37

What about something like
Kiran
Dilan
Rohan

They all work in both cultures?

MikeUniformMike · 20/10/2018 15:08

Zubair?
