I'm currently pregnant with a baby girl and
We like the name mya but NOT Pronounced mia...
her name would be Mya Morgan but I'm not sure if this is how it's spelt and if like to know ways other would spell it as I know there are a few.

it's very confusing to write as no one can hear me pronouncing it but I hope you understand...

So far we have come across
Mya
Maia
Maya
Myah
What looks the best on paper

Mia - I'd assume mee-ah

Maya- I'd assume may-a

Mya, Myah - I'd assume My-ah

Womanlikeme · 19/10/2018 08:07

The one I know is Maja.

PreseaCombatir · 19/10/2018 08:09

Mia - mee-uh
Mya- my-uh
Maya/Maia -either my-uh or May-uh (I know girls who spell both ways).
I think Mya is the only one where I would always say my-uh

MrsBungle · 19/10/2018 08:14

I know a Maia whose name is pronounced may-a.

The only spelling where I’d automatically presume it was pronounced my-ah would by myah but I do think that looks a bit strange.

Sunflower321 · 19/10/2018 08:15

I agree. Mya is the safest and most unambiguous spelling!

Greywind1523 · 19/10/2018 08:18

I’d pronounce Maya or Maia the same as what you’re looking for.

The Mexican Maya people is the same pronunciation.

jenniuol · 19/10/2018 08:21

Maya.

Ginmakesitallok · 19/10/2018 08:26

I know a Maia very well. Folk always mispell her name, but I love it. Parents considered Maja (Polish spelling) but knew people would pronounce it as spelt, with a hard j.

ABCFamily · 19/10/2018 08:32

Mya & Myah - I'd pronounce MY-AH. Either spelling seems fine to me (there is/was an R&B singer called Mya with the same pronounciation back in the day, but not sure if she's still active?).

Maia & Maya - I'd start with MAY-A, but wouldn't be surprised if I was corrected!

jumperoooo · 19/10/2018 08:34

What about Miya?

Ouchiebum · 19/10/2018 08:35

Maja gives the pronunciation you want

OhLemons · 19/10/2018 08:37

Maya.

juneau · 19/10/2018 08:39

The only way to spell it and know that people will pronounce it right is if you go with Mya or Myah. All the others are clearly, from this small thread alone, open to interpretation. People here in the UK don't pronounce a J in the middle of the name as a Y. My friend Andreja (pron. Andraya), often gets called Andredger - because that's how Brits see a J.

As for Maia or Maya - you're as likely to get May-a as My-a with those spellings.

laadedaa · 19/10/2018 08:42

Mya and myah have an 'eye' sound.
Maya and Maia have an 'a' sound.

LeeMiller · 19/10/2018 09:40

Maia or Maya.

Mia = mee-a
Mya looks like a letter is missing to me.

GlamourChanl · 19/10/2018 09:41

Maya? Like the Mayans?

Sunflower321 · 19/10/2018 11:31

The only way to spell it and know that people will pronounce it right is if you go with Mya or Myah.

I agree. Maya is often May-a rather than My-a.

pumpkinpie01 · 19/10/2018 11:36

I have a close relative called Myah, pronounced My ah , it has never been mispronounced, its a lovely pretty name but also strong, obviously Im biased thou!

EvieV28 · 19/10/2018 20:10

Maya

Pemba · 19/10/2018 20:58

The pronunciation may-a has come out of nowhere the last decade or so, probably coinciding with the popularity of May, especially as a middle name, It is based on a mistake I think (believing it to be an elongation of May), and is incorrect.

The pronunciation of my-a for Maya or Maia is standard and has been around for ever. Maya is also an Indian name, pronounced M-ya. Then there's Maya Angelou of course.

So Maya or Maia, no need for any fancy spellings. Correct people who try to say it wrong. And Mya looks a bit incomplete I always think.

PointlessUsername · 19/10/2018 20:59

Myia

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 19/10/2018 21:01

Maya. I teach and haven’t come across this spelling pronounced any other way, in my area.

mollibu · 19/10/2018 21:05

Call her Hettie.

Picknickers · 20/10/2018 00:06

1 of our dogs is Maya. Had an argument with the vet about pronunciation. Yes I'm one of those terrible people who pronounce it May-a 😂

DuckofDoom · 20/10/2018 00:15

Maya
