Hi all,
What are people's thoughts on the name Ida for a girl? It's our first baby, due in 6 weeks. DH absolutely loves the name but I'm yet to be convinced! I'm a bit worried it's going to become really popular...?
Thanks!!

Love Ida and Ada, or even Edna.

RavenWings · 14/10/2018 22:32

Love Ida and Ada (though I think they're a bit too similar to Ava for me). Please don't use Edna.

Sunflower321 · 14/10/2018 22:55

Is Ida pronounced Eeda?

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2018 22:57

No, it's as bad as Edna. And that's bad.

Ada is OK though.

NameChange30 · 14/10/2018 23:00

I like it, but if you’re not convinced you shouldn’t use it.

What names do you like?

Karachii · 14/10/2018 23:03

Down.

Love Ida but I had a Great Aunty Ida when I was growing up. It's popular at the moment (also with the Ayda spelling) through Mrs Robbie Williams - although pronunciation can be Eye-da or Eye-da.

GulliverUnravels · 14/10/2018 23:08

I love it - partly because I know an Ida (pron eeda) and she's lovely. Not quite as keen on the eye-da pronunciation but it's a nice name either way.

Shadow1234 · 14/10/2018 23:10

I think its short and sweet.

Please dont go with Edna - my 87 year old mums name - and she hated it that much, she used her middle name instead.

namechangedtoday15 · 14/10/2018 23:10

Sorry meant pronunciation is Eye-da or Eh-da.

bridgetreilly · 15/10/2018 01:03

It's lovely and no, I don't think it will be too popular.

villainousbroodmare · 15/10/2018 01:05

I'm not fond of Ida, Ada, or Edna... all rather inelegant imo.

jackio2205 · 15/10/2018 01:31

Ada for me is the ooooone but never thought of Ida, really like that too!
The worrying about it becoming popular, I mean, why worry about it, aaaaany name can, you just cant tell? X

llangennith · 15/10/2018 01:33

No no no!
Not Ida or Ada or Edna or any other name that sounds like a geriatric woman on Coronation Street.
There are so many beautiful girls' names, please choose one of them and not Ida etc.

Ida is pretty and a bit different. There is a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera called 'Princess Ida'.

Ada is OK and seems to be fashionable again now, though always seems old-ladyish to me, probably because I knew old ladies with the name, back in the 70s.

But Edna is hideous. Maybe because I think of Dame Edna Everage?

tryingtobemybestme · 15/10/2018 02:52

I can't get behind Ida (Eye-da) sorry! All it makes me think of is Ida Buttrose, who don't get me wrong an amazing woman in her own right, but she is 76...

LeeMiller · 15/10/2018 07:06

I like ee-da but not eye-da

lmstepho · 15/10/2018 07:14

Thanks everyone, my favourite name is Clara but DH not keen, middle ground seems to be Nina which we both quite like!

Sorry it's awful.

TroysMammy · 15/10/2018 07:20

I always think of Les Dawson and Roy Barraclough's characters Cissie and Ida. Sorry.

HeronLanyon · 15/10/2018 07:22

I like Ida. Bit of confusion with Ada ? Possibly ?

Sunflower321 · 15/10/2018 08:16

Ada is pronounced Ayda

And I'd pronounce Ida as Eeda

So quite different imo

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/10/2018 08:18

I prefer Ava.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 15/10/2018 08:21

I quite like Ida (pr Eye-da) as for me it's associated with the James Baldwin book, Another Country, but think Nina is prettier. Ada and Edna I dislike.
