Surname problems

Hello everyone!

Just wanted some opinions on a naming dilemma we are having.

Our surname is Allawaye (pronounce alla-way). We are expecting a baby and our problem is that the names we like best at the moment begin with 'Al', like our surname.

For a girl, we love Alice, Alma, Alexandra and Allegra.

For a boy we like Albert and Alistair.

Do these sound like ridiculous with the surname Allawaye? Is it just too much of a mouthful? Can any of these names work? They'd all have middle names (as yet unchosen but we would make sure they helped the flow and definitely didn't include an a or l! But my issue is that in England people don't seem to use middle names unlike in other countries and I'm worried that without the middle name they might sound too much like a tongue twister.

So - are they all awful, are they all fine, or are some of them/any of them fine? Please help!

Personally I think A names would be fine, but Al names are too much.

SoupDragon · 14/10/2018 12:01

Alexandra seems not too bad but only if it doesn’t get shortened to Alex.

I think you might need to re-think TBH

bridgetreilly · 14/10/2018 12:03

Yeah, I wouldn't pick any of those with that surname.

Icklepup · 14/10/2018 12:04

I wouldn't

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2018 12:07

I think you'd need a name ending in a strong consonant that doesn't run into the surname.

Albert Allawaye sounds fine, but the 'r' ending of Alistair runs into the surname making it sound like one long word, as do all the girls' names ending with 'a'.

Alice Allawaye works best out of the girls' names.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/10/2018 12:41

It's too much. You are really hung up on the "al" thing!

Dazedandconfused1988 · 14/10/2018 12:44

I think its absolutely fine.
Most people will just call D.C. by their first name anyway.
If you give them a middle name you break it up too
“Alice Beth Allawaye”
“Alastair John Alawaye”
And so on

hungryandtired · 14/10/2018 12:45

E

Oops! Didn't mean to post a letter E! I am hung up on Al names but it really is a total coincidence! They're names I've liked for years, even since meeting my husband and changing my surname!

I think it sounds lovely. Nice and lyrical sounding :)

Poxoff · 14/10/2018 12:56

I think it's fine, and memorable, which is a good thing

ZebraKid71 · 14/10/2018 13:20

It's fine with names that don't end in an ah or er sound. So Alice works well but Alma doesn't... In my opinion.

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/10/2018 13:22

I love an illiterative name, the make me smile.

HJL2506 · 14/10/2018 13:30

I think the only one you can get away with is Albert with your surname :)

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2018 13:43

I wouldn't use a name ending in a because of the r that people slip in (like in law ran' order). Otherwise I think it's ok. Not keen on Albert.
People do tend to be known by Firstname Surname whatever you read on here. Apart from the likes of Ronaldo, Cher, Madonna, Beyonce and Kylie.

Oysterbabe · 14/10/2018 16:54

I think it sounds fine. I like a bit of alliteration.

SneakySneaky · 15/10/2018 00:10

I find Allegra Allawaye really hard to say out loud. It comes out like Allegwallaye for me!

Alice Allawaye flows well and is fun to say as long as you don’t mind the Al-Al sounds being so close together.

Albert Allawaye sounds like a wonderful name to me!

newrubylane · 16/10/2018 13:20

I agree with @dramaalpaca - Albert works because of the strong B and T sounds breaking it up.

Maybe you could try something beginning with an L instead?

Angharad07 · 16/10/2018 13:25

Albert Allaway sounds amazing!

rainbowstardrops · 16/10/2018 13:39

I think they all sound absolutely fine

GraceMarks · 16/10/2018 15:38

I personally think the Al Al thing is a bit too much. An Albert or Alistair might end up being called Al as a nn! What about Elizabeth for a girl?

RoomWithALoon · 16/10/2018 18:26

The Al Al thing is okay - you can certainly get away with it. But definitely avoid ending on a "a"!

ravensmum · 18/10/2018 08:09

I have an alliterative name and I LOVE it and am often told it’s very memorable and cool. Agree with others that it’s all in how easy it is to say - Alex allawaye is easy to say, allie allawaye is not! But just to reassure you that I’m very grateful to mum and dad and not cursing them or anything.
