Hermione

I know there's one obvious connection that people will make with Hermione but although we're big Harry Potter fans, we love the name regardless of that. Is it useable?

I love it.

I love Harry Potter too (see username) but also think it's feminine without being twee.

However, people will associate it with Harry Potter and assume you named her after Hermione Granger. It means well born in Greek and was a daughter of a Spartan King, named after Hermes the messenger God.

It's a cool name but I think the HP connection is just too strong for a human name. (It'd be good for a pet though!)

LionsTeeth · 11/10/2018 20:09

100% usable imo. Beautiful name.

osa20 · 11/10/2018 20:12

Love it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/10/2018 20:18

I teach a Hermione. Everyone asks her if her parents are HP fans but once they have it's gone. She is delightful

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/10/2018 20:21

I don't see why not. Smile

BumbleNova · 11/10/2018 20:26

I love it. Harry potter Hermione is also such a strong role model. She is bright, fierce and true to herself.

IdaBWells · 11/10/2018 20:30

To be honest I am always somewhat confused about how to pronounce it, is it Har-mar-nay?

I was just helping DS do some text analysis of the first Harry Potter book last night!

EvaTheOptimist · 11/10/2018 20:35

Her-My-Oh-Knee

SemperIdem · 11/10/2018 20:56

I love it. And did use it, as a middle rather than first name.

Rumpleteezer · 11/10/2018 21:24

I posted this same question back in the summer! We haven't had number 3 yet but hubby decided he definitely wasn't keen on it as a first name. I'm hoping for a middle though. I just don't want to be explaining every time someone asks that yes we are Harry Potter fans but no that's not why that's her name!

nocluenoidea · 11/10/2018 21:28

Beautiful name!

Eleanor90 · 11/10/2018 21:29

It’s an amazing name, I love it! Not too Harry Potter.

LeeMiller · 11/10/2018 21:31

It's too linked to Harry Potter for me.

RedDwarves · 11/10/2018 21:32

I don't like it, and I would assume that anyone with a Hermione was a big HP fan. I am an HP fan, but I still don't like the name (I don't like 99% of the names in HP though...)

moredoll · 11/10/2018 21:36

Harry Potter

strawberrypenguin · 11/10/2018 21:36

I think it's lovely. If people do make the HP connection (which a lot will to start with) then Hermione Granger is a good positive character. Harry Potter means everyone knows how to pronounce it too Smile

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/10/2018 21:37

It's lovely, my first thought is Hermione Norris. She's lovely.

blueskiesandforests · 11/10/2018 21:37

I work with a German Hermione who was an adult when the first Harry potter book was published. Her name is pronounced her-meanie! But I saw it written down before I heard her say it so I heard it the Her-my-oh-knee way in my head first. Despite knowing she predates HP and pronounces it differently, I still think of Harry Potter...

If I wrote Hermione in my phone it autoprompts with Granger as the next word.

Still it is usable, if you don't mind the HP connection, and if your surname isnt Granger or Weasley or Potter...

Brandnewstart · 11/10/2018 21:39

I love it from studying ‘A Winter’s Tale’ at A Level (about 100 years ago). It’s a beautiful name.

MollyHuaCha · 11/10/2018 22:03

I like it.

Re pp... when said quickly, Her-my-oh-nee becomes Her-mar-nee.

Or German version Her-mee-oh-nee becomes Her-mee-nee.

Thetimehascometo · 12/10/2018 00:10

I came across a lady with a newborn in a shop the other day, the assistant asked the baby’s name ‘hermione’ was the response. The assistants next reply was ‘lovely, are you a big Harry Potter fan?’

If you’re happy for that to be a frequent response then go ahead (the lady in question seemed a bit miffed and made a comment about reclaiming the name and not actually liking Harry Potter 🙈)

Wherearemycarkeys · 12/10/2018 03:38

Hermione is an incredible name! I wanted if for my daughter but wasn't quite sure of nickname options so went for a different name in the end (but I'd definitely use it for a future daughter!). I am a massive Harry Potter fan but even if I didn't like the books it's hard to find anything negative about Hermione as a character. She's intelligent, tough, kind, loyal, hardworking.. What an amazing role model!

ZebraKid71 · 12/10/2018 20:08

It's a great name but I don't think you'll ever be able to escape the Harry Potter connection... If the constant questions would bother you (as a parent or if it would have bothered you having something similar as a child) then I'd put it as a middle name.

On the plus side... I think it being so connected with Harry Potter puts people off so it is still not widely used.

FartnissEverbeans · 13/10/2018 05:29

Harry Potter is a blessing because it means everyone will be able to pronounce it!

I’ve come across a few while teaching and it works fine in real life. It’s a lovely name
