Hello all,
I'm having a boy in November, and husband and I are at a loss as to what to call him. He wants Richard, I want Stephen. Which one do you all prefer? Thanks so much!

Congratulations! Due November here too.

Would you both be happy with either? If so pick out of a hat? They are both nice normal names and I can't see you going wrong with either. In this house I definitely get the deciding vote as ad my OH puts it I've done all the hard work to get baby here! I'd pull that card if you are set on your name x

Wherearemycarkeys · 10/10/2018 06:01

Not Richard - I think it's quite boring and old-manly but not in a cool way. Also there's a chance that when kids get wind of the fact that 'Dick' is a nickname for Richard, he might have a hard time

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 10/10/2018 06:08

I think Stephen gets my vote (although he may end up being called Steve, which is dated in a not very good way).

Peachbubble · 10/10/2018 06:55

I like Stephen of the two, although I do know a 7 year old Richard, which sounds so unusual (and nice) to hear when all his peers are Archie, Noah, Mason etc

Sunflower321 · 10/10/2018 07:02

Both Richard and Stephen make a refreshing change to all the Archies, Alfies, Noahs etc Great strong names!

IVflytrap · 10/10/2018 07:28

I like Stephen the best.

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2018 07:36

Stephen, much nicer and well due a come back.

LeeMiller · 10/10/2018 07:48

Both are nice and will probably sound exotic in a class full of Arlos and Leo's.
I don't like Ricky/Rich/Ritchie so I've probably choose Stephen (Stevie is quite sweet), though there might be more creative nickname alternatives.

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/10/2018 10:28

I like Stephen best, not keen on Steve but the i know an adult Stephen who always goes by Stephen so I think its possible. Ste is also quite nice

I don't know any little Stephen's or Richards but I do know a newborn Richie. Can't say I'm a fan

DC18 · 10/10/2018 11:34

I prefer Stephen. I knew a Richard at school that was teased with the name 'Dick' x

bridgetreilly · 10/10/2018 11:38

Richard. Stephen is so boring.

JeanPagett · 10/10/2018 11:43

I prefer Stephen

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/10/2018 11:46

Richard, not keen on Stephen.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/10/2018 12:32

Both aren't my taste and are very dated imo. Is there anything you like? If not I'd say Stephen at a push.

AtticaRose · 10/10/2018 13:00

Both are nice strong names. I think I prefer Richard.

Cosmoa · 10/10/2018 16:15

Lol at Richard and Stephen sounding exotic 😂

I understand your point.. But I bet a lot of the kids have a Dad or Uncle called Richard or Stephen... Or both. Exotic is a push!

legalseagull · 10/10/2018 16:27

I like Richard. I'd call him Rich though so depends if you're happy for people to shorten it. Likewise Steve

Sunflower321 · 10/10/2018 16:51

I like Richard. I'd call him Rich though

What's wrong with calling him Richard?

Rich sounds strange as a name, like poor.

legalseagull · 10/10/2018 19:19

@Sunflower321 Rich is a really common nickname for Richard. Most Richards I've met get called Rich

Glumglowworm · 10/10/2018 20:34

I prefer Stephen

MikeUniformMike · 10/10/2018 20:42

I like both. How about a name with a similar classic style like Philip, Michael, Martin, Alan, Mark, Peter etc?

VenusClapTrap · 10/10/2018 23:08

Richard. Great name. It was on my shortlist.

BackforGood · 10/10/2018 23:16

I like them both. Slightly prefer Stephen.

DramaAlpaca · 10/10/2018 23:18

Both good, strong classic names. I prefer Stephen.

Sophronia · 10/10/2018 23:33

Stephen
