Emily - is it too popular?

Hi Ladies,

I'm considering Emily - sweet and feminine name

It has been on top of the charts for a while now so I'm thinking is it too popular (i.e. 3 per class..!)
what do you think?

Thank you

When my dd went to primary school 20% of the girls in her class were called Emily. she's 21 now. In my job around 100 babies are born a year and not heard an Emily for about five years.

showmeahero · 08/10/2018 16:24

Really like Emily, and Emma too.
Not so many around anymore!

Waterstonian · 08/10/2018 19:09

An Emily here. When I was younger I always wished my name was Caroline or Madeleine, as there were so many Emily’s in all my classes.

In fact, in my primary school class, the 3 Emily’s (myself included) all had surnames starting with P.

So we had to be known as Emily P (Peters), Emily Par (Parker) and Emily Pay (Payne).

Waterstonian · 08/10/2018 19:10

(Surnames changed but along those lines)

PurestGreen · 08/10/2018 19:17

I know two toddler Emilys (and I don't know many people) not to mention all the similar sounding Amelia, Emmy etc.

It is a VERY pretty name but the popularity would put me off.

A lovely name, and don’t assume it will be popular in your area/school.
In the DCs primary school of 80 children there isn’t a single Emily (or Amelia!). I’ve only come across a couple of Emily’s recently out of the hundreds of children I come into contact with.
In another school there might be 3 in a class - it’s just pot luck.

RomanyRoots · 08/10/2018 19:22

I am beginning to think these popular name lists are dependant on where you live.
E,g not heard of a baby Amelia, Emily, or Olivia for at least 6 years.
yet, they are supposed to be the most popular.

I like Emily

daisypond · 08/10/2018 19:23

I only know a couple of toddler Emilys, but I'm not keen on it. I don't know any older ones, apart from a couple of much older people. It's very dull name to me. I don't think it's classic or timeless at all.

Melissa
Emma
Marianne
Amy
Lara

lexi727 · 08/10/2018 19:26

It's a bit generic

huggybear · 08/10/2018 19:29

It's a lovely name, I only know one and she's 23.

holasoydora · 08/10/2018 19:30

It's my name and I like it . But I am over 40 so hardly any my age. When my mum named me she said it was an old lady's name...

I think you should just choose the name you like, if it is Emily then don't worry about what anyone thinks. I have a Thomas, of which there are thousands (which doesn't bother me at all)

SemperIdem · 08/10/2018 19:36

I think there are quite a lot of them, I just seem to not live in an area where many of them live. I think names can have significant pockets of popularity in some areas versus others.

There was only one Emily at my high school of 1500 pupils. To this day I’ve only met 3, 2 in their late 20’s and 1 is a toddler.

I think it’s a lovely name.

SemperIdem · 08/10/2018 19:37

Oats one of the names you listed is my daughters name and I was just musing how nice Emily sounded with it!

As an alternative, maybe Faye?

Pebblesandfriends · 08/10/2018 19:39

I haven't heard it recently and love it. What about Evangeline or Elsy as alternatives?

sue51 · 08/10/2018 19:43

There were quite a few of them in DDs school year. Its a lovely name but a bit overused. How about Esme or Eleanor?

whiskeysourpuss · 08/10/2018 19:45

DD1(18) is still the only Emily I personally know. She was the only Emily in both primary schools she went to & the only Emily in her year of approx 250 kids & the years either side at high school & yet it was the number one name the year she was born.

Chloe was at number 6, Sophie at 8 & Caitlin at 11 that year & there were at least 3 of each in every class she was in through primary & high school so I'm not sure I'd bother relying on the popular names lists for an indication of how many will possibly be in the same class.

Maccycheesefries · 08/10/2018 19:46

Emilia isn't as common as Emily.

redexpat · 08/10/2018 20:10

I've never met a bad one.

violeticecream · 08/10/2018 20:48

My youngest (age 11) is Emily. She was the only one in her year at juniors. There is one other in her year at secondary. I have always loved the name so it wouldn't have put me off if it was popular or not.

ABitOTT · 09/10/2018 00:32

It was our first choice girls name for most of my first pregnancy 26 years ago. Went into labour, got to hospital & the midwife asked if we had a favoured name. I asked her how many Emilys she had delivered recently & she said practically every other baby was an Emily. We went with an alternative name which wasn't popular.

Weird thing is that we've met a few girl & women named Emily over the years, but have met more who share my DD's name.

Go with what you like. Popularity of a name just shows what a great choice it is. Emily is a very pretty name.

kettleonplease · 09/10/2018 05:50

names.darkgreener.com/#emily it is number 5 in the 2017 ratings, so is extremely popular. It's pretty though!
