Awful. Sorry.

Ruby is nice though.

SmallAndFarAway · 07/10/2018 20:25

You know that old saying, does it sound more like a stripper than the president (or PM) - I'm afraid Amethyst falls in the wrong camp. Amelia, perhaps?

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 07/10/2018 20:27

I think it's lovely but perhaps better as a middle name.

TatianaLarina · 07/10/2018 20:33

Amethyst is pretty and unusual.

Ruby, Pearl and Crystal are the stripper stones.

Polkasq · 07/10/2018 20:34

I like it.

Justanewname · 07/10/2018 20:34

I like it. There’s always the perfectly sensible if a bit dated Amy as a nickname if she grows up to want a more ordinary name.

Cosmoa · 07/10/2018 20:37

I love it! But at the same time.. The thyst sound isn't the nicest sound to say (to me anyway). It is lovely though. And if someone told me it was their name I'd be pleased to hear it!

Topseyt · 07/10/2018 20:38

Not keen, but it isn't the worst I have ever heard.

I'd be more classic and go for Amelia or Amelie, but I guess it is just personal taste.

madeoficecream · 07/10/2018 20:39

I think its lovely and it was high up on our list for a girl.
Its a good one too because it can easily be shortened to Amy if she ever feels its a bit too out there for her!

I dont get all this 'stripper' stuff!! Everyone on here seems to hate precious stone names.... I really doubt youd actually ever encounter a stripper named Amethyst, Garnet, Emerald, Topaz, Beryl or Opal!! These names have been in usage for hundreds of years....
I used to work in an old peoples home where a perfectly run of the mill old lady called Emerald was.... she had certainly never been a stripper!!

I think they are coming back in to fashion now just like names from the turn of the century and Victorian times such as Cora and Edith etc
So they will not be unusual on the playground and certainly not associated with strippers!

ThymeCake · 07/10/2018 20:39

I like it! Certainly better than dullsville Amelia.

geniee · 07/10/2018 20:41

Thanks everyone Smile what would your go-to nickname be of the name? Would it be Amy? I liked Ammie/Ama more but just wondering if your first thought to nickname would be Amy as that one didn't cross my mind?

Ami.

I know an Amelia who’s known as Ami and I’ve always liked it.

Never liked Amy.

Wolfiefan · 07/10/2018 20:48

Beryl, Opal and Pearl are names.
Sapphire and Amethyst are stones.

MissBartlettsconscience · 07/10/2018 20:50

It's the Ordinary princess's name in the fabulous mm Kaye book - Amethyst Alexandra Augusta Araminta Adelaide Aurelia Anne known as Amy.

TatianaLarina · 07/10/2018 20:51

Ruby Coral Pearl Opal are the stripper stones.

Amethyst, Garnet, Topaz are Edwardian haut bo.

midsomermurderess · 07/10/2018 21:05

I'm pretty sure Ruby isn't at all strippery.

PassMeTheBleach · 07/10/2018 21:19

I hate it when people say a name is a ‘stripper name’, but I actually did once know a stripper called Amethyst!

I don’t think that’s any reason not to use it if you love it, though. It’s not to my taste, but I’m not the one naming your baby!

TatianaLarina · 07/10/2018 21:44

London escort guide lists 18 Rubys.

Sophronia · 07/10/2018 23:29

I like Amethyst and Sapphire

moredoll · 08/10/2018 05:24

Prefer
Emerald,
Pearl,
Ruby,
Coral,
Topaz

Amethyst doesn't really work as a name.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/10/2018 05:30

You could call her Meth for short!

LeeMiller · 08/10/2018 06:02

It's not a particularly nice-sounding word, the 'thyst' bit is very harsh. I agree with pp that there are nicer gemstone names.

Cbeebiesrehab · 08/10/2018 08:20

Grandma Pearl will be well chuffed to know she’s considered a ‘stripper stone’

Find Amethyst a bit of a mouthful and no shortenings come ‘naturally’ to me.

TatianaLarina · 08/10/2018 12:17

It's not a particularly nice-sounding word, the 'thyst' bit is very harsh.

I think it’s a very pretty word and I like the ‘thyst’.

Mijkl · 08/10/2018 19:49

Love it. Love jewel names. Don't associate them with strippers, more with an older generation. (Stripper name to me is more things like Randi, Kayleigh, Britney ,Chyna and Kardashian type names).
