Opinions on the name Edie?

It's one of my favourite names.

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/10/2018 10:52

Edie is shirt for Edith. I love it actually . By naming her Edith you will eliminating Nate the uncertainty expressed above as regards pronounciation and/ or spelling. It also provides a dignified name for an adult if ever she wants to use one.

SuperstarDJ · 07/10/2018 10:56

I like it. The two young ones that I know are just called that - it’s not short for anything.

Pronounced E-Dee.

Sunflower321 · 07/10/2018 12:00

I'd definitely give her a proper name eg
Edith
Edwina
Eden
Edna

Edie alone looks like a short form and could be mispronunced Ed ie, like Ed

daisypond · 07/10/2018 13:20

Sorry, I don't like it at all. If it was short for Edith or something, it would be better. But Edie is twee and bland and will get muddled up with the other million Ellies, Effies, Adas, Evies, etc.

Sunflower321 · 07/10/2018 13:39

If you want it pronounced Eedie, I'd spell it like that.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 07/10/2018 13:41

But why would you spell it in a new way Sunflower when there is an accepted pronunciation of the spelling in the OP.

Sunflower321 · 07/10/2018 13:45

Because there may be others like me who see Edie and assume Ed-ie rather than EEd-ie, to avoid any mispronunciations.

Pantheon · 07/10/2018 13:45

I like it!

wildewillow · 07/10/2018 15:12

It's pronounced Ee-dee because that's the sound the vowel E to consonant D to vowels ie makes. It's basic English language. Eddie/Eddy has a double D.

Lovely name OP!

Sunflower321 · 07/10/2018 15:51

But Ed is Ed and not Eed Confused

MrsFoxPlus4 · 07/10/2018 15:54

I think it’s weird giving a longer name you don’t even want to use lol. Edie is a lovely name :)

Sunflower321 · 07/10/2018 15:54

And edible, edify, educate etc...?

easterholidays · 07/10/2018 15:57

I know a little Edie and I think it's lovely. Nobody has had problems knowing how to pronounce it!

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 07/10/2018 16:05

Long E, long D. I think most people would know that.

I love Edie, and know one currently. I think it stands alone well, but I also like it as a familiar name for the classic Edith.

tazzy73 · 07/10/2018 16:56

My niece is Edie, stand alone name. Not a nick name. Suits her perfectly.
No issues with how it's pronounced.
Go for it.

Duvetdaysbliss · 07/10/2018 17:06

Totally love it but got overruled by hubby who says it’s too old lady 😞😞

kettleonplease · 07/10/2018 22:08

Thank you all for your comments, I think you've made up my mind :)

I have an Edie. Just that on BC. No pronunciation problems or being called Eddie.

Sunflower321 · 08/10/2018 08:31

Would Edie shortened to Ed still be Eed?

MadisonAvenue · 08/10/2018 08:36

Love it! My Nan was Edie (Edith).

I know a 2 year old Eden and that gets shortened to Edie too.

deptfordgirl · 08/10/2018 09:29

Gorgeous. I much prefer it as a nn for Eden or Edith though.

Sunflower321 · 08/10/2018 17:18

Just thought of another example: Edinburgh isn't pronounced Eedinburgh Grin

daisypond · 08/10/2018 18:57

It's Edie (Eedie) in the same way as it's Rosie and not Rossie, Jodie and not Joddie. It's to do with the way the vowels and consonants combine in a certain order, and where the emphasis goes, which means the vowels (E or O in my examples) are long and not short. Ellie has a short vowel at the start (to do with the double consonant LL), but Edie has a long vowel at the start.
