Thoughts and suggestions

I'm pregnant with a little girl due in November and really struggling for names. I love Ada as does my DH however all our children have longer names that are then shortened.

I like 'old lady' names that are coming back into fashion. Any suggestions for similar names or names that Ada could be the nickname for. Thank you.

I ideally want something that is Ada... to be shortened rather than an Ade. Complicated I know, not sure if it's being pregnant but being unable to decide is driving me insane and can't get Ada out of my head.

Also unfortunately don't want to name her after a country.

For reference other names we have liked/considered/called children

Nancy
Margot
Edith (NN: Ed-ee)
Ingrid
Saskia

I think you can have Adaline

Nightlights · 05/10/2018 21:29

Or Alfrada/Alfreda if it's the sound rather than the spelling that's the issue?

Nightlights · 05/10/2018 21:34

For what it's worth I think Ada is just a lovely name on its own

florascotia2 · 05/10/2018 21:54

Byron's daughter/pioneer computer expert is always known as Ada Lovelace, but her real name was 'Augusta Ada'. Could you perhaps find a long name that you like as a first name and then have Ada as a second name that you use all the time? It's a nice name.

I also like Ada as a stand alone name. Maybe give her a longer middle name to go with it.

Other ideas for old fashioned names:

Elsie
Matilda
Evelyn
Betty
Bethany (Beth)
Harriet
Camilla
Camille
Florence
Georgina
Rosalie
Rosalind
Madeline. (Maddy)
Iris

Call her Ada. Adeline, Adele, Adela Adelie and Adelaide get a No from me. Adaline is awful.
Dahlia - Dahl-ya or Dale-ya?
Delilah - no
Camille - nice
Rosaline - No.
Helana - Helena is ok
Lucile - no. Lucille also a no
Cecilia - not sure
Heidi - nice
Nancy - nice
Frances - ok
Ophelia - no
Imogen - don't like Immy.

Edinburgh2012 · 06/10/2018 17:10

I'm saying pronounced Dahl-ya but worried about confusion. As for Imogen we would call Imogen no nick name.

Nancy is great. Nancy Ada.

LeeMiller · 07/10/2018 10:49

Ada is lovely as a standalone name, like Nina/Rosa/Anna. I think it's the strongest sounding of your names. I really like
Ada Frances
Ada Nancy
Ada Imogen

Your other choices are a bit frilly/fussy for my taste. Even if you don't call her by a nickname, it's likely that school friends will, so I wouldn't choose Imogen unless you'd be happy for her to be called Immy or Imo.

anatol · 07/10/2018 13:52

I think you should just call her Ada. The other names you've suggested aren't particularly long so I wouldn't worry about the length of it and to be honest I think it's nicer as a standalone name than of any of the longer names that it could be shortened from.

TatianaLarina · 07/10/2018 14:28

Love Delilah, Helena, Cecilia, Nancy and Imogen.

All much nicer than Ada which is grim.
