Place names

Looking for opinions...

DC1 has a name that's also a place (it's a capital city). Would it look cringey to have DC2 also having a name after a place?

It isn't a theme I'm after. I sometimes forget DC1's name is also a place and then after looking down my long list for DC2, there's also a few place names on there that I like!

Is this something that would look weird?

Depends on the places! Some place names are so common as people-names that it doesn't matter. (Or indeed are named after people.)

If it's like, Iona and Florence - that's fine.

Adelaide and Virginia - also fine.

Bristol and Brooklyn, then maybe a bit weird.

bridgetreilly · 04/10/2018 12:45

Two definitely becomes a theme, so I would probably avoid it, personally.

Aprilislonggone · 04/10/2018 12:47

Nice places? Coz Newcastle and Sunderland for names would be shite!!
And I say that as a Geordie!!

BestBeforeYesterday · 04/10/2018 12:50

I know a fair number of parents whose DC's names follow a theme. I don't find it cringey, and once they're adults not many people are even going to know.

pixieloux · 04/10/2018 12:54

I think it depends on the name. If it’s a well established and used name then yes but if not then I’d probably avoid it.

For example, my eldest daughter is Aurora... Technically, a place name but it also has a lot of other connections and it’s the place isn’t one you think of being outside of the US so we’ve considered Florence this time around.

pixieloux · 04/10/2018 12:55

That didn’t make sense lol. It’s not the sort of name you’d connect with the place when outside of the US*

BikeRunSki · 04/10/2018 13:06

Some place names are commonly used first names - Florence, Georgia, Adelaide, Sidney etc, largely because those places were named after people. I wouldn’t see two of these types of names as a theme. My siblings and I all have place names meaningful to DDad as middle names. Only mine is not also a commonly used given name. My DD is also named after a place, where DH and I first lived together, but it’s also a commonly used girls name.

If I came across a sib set called say Manhattan and Canberra, I’d think it a little odd if the third sibling was called say, Paul, but I wouldn’t loose any sleep over it.

RuthW · 04/10/2018 17:35

My dd is Florence. When she was at primary school, one year she was on a table with Georgia, Paris and Devon. Made me chucke!

SumAndSubstance · 04/10/2018 17:44

I’m not against themes in particular, but that theme would make me assume it’s where each child was conceived (perhaps it is!)

SabineUndine · 04/10/2018 22:29

One of my favourite names is Aude. It’s a girl’s name over there, also the name of a river and a region.

SabineUndine · 04/10/2018 22:29

Sorry ‘over there’ in France.

Sunflower321 · 05/10/2018 08:50

It's fine, lots of place names used for people too eg Paris, Florence, Sofia, Brooklyn, Madison etc

HJL2506 · 05/10/2018 10:27

I think what previous posters have suggested is fine. Siblings like Paris and Sydney I would avoid.

MikeUniformMike · 05/10/2018 19:34

Depends on the name. Nancy and Florence are OK. Leigh and Bradley are OK. Chester and Lincoln a bit railway timetabley.
Burnley and Preston may sound like a football fixture.
Milan and Paris too fashion showy ...

manicinsomniac · 06/10/2018 00:18

Agree that it depends on the name.

If it's another capital city (or even well known city) then I wouldn't, to be honest. (ie assuming your child is called London, Paris or Rome then I wouldn't use another of those and nor would I use Milan, Florence, Sydney or Atlanta)

But if it's a country, area or random small place then I wouldn't worry. (ie I think it would be fine to have London and India, Paris and Alaska or Rome and Brooklyn - though that last one's a bit too Beckham-like!)

manicinsomniac · 06/10/2018 00:19

PS - I know twins called Sydney and Atlanta. They have two cousins their age called Dakota and Savannah. Doesn't seem to be an issue for them and I think all 4 are lovely names. But I wouldn't want so much of a theme personally.

kettleonplease · 06/10/2018 03:01

What is the other name? Like others have said, it depends on the name

LeeMiller · 06/10/2018 10:28

I agree it depends on the names, but generally I'd be inclined to avoid as two will often feel a bit themey even when the names themselves are well-established. For example, Florence on its own is fine, Florence and Paris/India/Georgia I would definitely notice.

babystripes · 08/10/2018 20:12

India
Brooklyn
Paris
