Help please! Opinions on names for imminent DS...

DS is due very soon, and we're struggling to narrow our shortlist. Would love your opinions please:

Albert
Angus
Arthur
Alistair
Jasper
Magnus
Lucas
Stanley
Walter

Other names we like but can't use, for various reasons, include:
Frederick
Theodore (Teddy)
Percy
Wilfred
Henry
Harry
Edward

DD's name is fairly classic yet unusual, beginning with F. Ideally the name needs to work and be easily spelled / pronounced in UK, US and Australia (although almost anything goes in US!).

Open to fresh ideas too. Thank you!!!

Thanks everyone - this is enormously helpful!
Curious to know why Albert doesn't work in Australia, rainbowqueen (forgive my ignorance! Blush).

Jasper and Angus are my favourites.

YogaPants · 03/10/2018 17:18

Jasper, Alistair (but prefer Alasdair) and Lucas are my favourites.

Edmund, William and Charles would be my suggestions.

whatausername · 03/10/2018 21:04

In order of descending preference: Alistair, Jasper, Lucas, Magnus.

Am meh about or dislike the rest.

Rainbowqueeen · 03/10/2018 23:20

Hi Op. I guess I’m saying that because I live here (ex pat) and have never met or heard of one. Or ever seen it on anyone’s list of possibles over here

And I get the feeling Aussies would think it was a very odd name.

Hope that explains it.

Good luck choosing a name and congrats on your pregnancy.

We have very similar tastes. I have a 4 week old son called Stanley. So I'm biased. I think Stanley is a fab name and I've had nothing but positive comments. To me it's a good mix of being an old fashioned name but also unusual enough to be a little unique without being try-hard. Plus it's easy to say and spell.

Albert - LOVE it. This was a top contender for me, and Bertie is a fab nickname.
Angus - too Scottish for me. Like it though. No nickname potential, which puts me off.
Arthur - love this too. Not sure about nicknames for it though.
Alistair - nope, too plain.
Jasper - pretentious.
Magnus - OMG love it. Strong name, Scandi roots, traditional.
Lucas - this was on my list too. Just a fab timeless name.
Stanley - see above 💕💕💕💙💙💙
Walter - FANTASTIC. Favourite name on your list after Stanley.

Thanks so much everyone! Rainbowqueen that makes sense, although I think unusualness is good. We definitely went down that route with DD's name and are happy we did. Still no decisions but great to get everyone's suggestions!

Love Angus and jasper. Really dislike Lucas and Walter.

Fergus?

LittleFilly · 01/12/2018 22:17

Ok, our shortlist has evolved. Baby knocking on the door and we're still crippled by indecision 😕. Would love your thoughts on any of the following:

Alistair / Alasdair
Christopher
James
Jasper
Magnus
Maxwell
Walter

Or other ideas? At this stage we're open to anything vaguely sensible!

Absolutely love Fergus, Blustery Day, but sadly too many Fs with DDs name!

How about Raymond (Ray), Dylan, or Simon.
From your new list, I like Alistair, James and Max.

Bluerussian · 02/12/2018 03:03

I like Angus, Alistair and Lucas very much.

Banana1979 · 02/12/2018 04:41

Alistair / Alasdair - im sorry-think name is awful esp spelled with a 'd') . Stair or Alice for short? Hmm
Christopher- he will be called chris most of the time. Too common for me
James - again very common and sorry to say- boring
Jasper - beautiful, even jas/ jaz for short is nice
Magnus- a really nice strong manly name
Maxwell- again hell be called max most of the time. Common but not too bad.
Walter- lovely lovely name, very American. This along with magnus my favourite x

Banana1979 · 02/12/2018 04:44

I do also like titus, chase and blase. Mattheo is a strong name as is achilles

Lisaturtle · 02/12/2018 04:48

Would you shorten Walter to Walt? It's a big anniversary year for Disney I think so might be topical if you wanted a reason behind the name?

Lisaturtle · 02/12/2018 04:49

Actually I don't know that much about Walt Disney now I've said it! Heading to Netflix documentary later, he might not be a great namesake after all...

SimplySteve · 02/12/2018 05:51

I like Lucas from your list. Something like Jasper, James, Ruben or Armin would work as middle name. Congratulations on your imminent son!

MuminItaly · 02/12/2018 06:42

Albert (nn Albie) ❤️

ernjas · 02/12/2018 08:52

Magnus is my favourite out of your new shortlist!

Princesspeachy0 · 02/12/2018 09:08

I like Jasper and Maxwell from your list, both have good NN too.

n0ne · 02/12/2018 10:21

Fabulous list, really hard to choose. I like Stanley, Angus and Magnus the best

n0ne · 02/12/2018 10:38

Oh sorry, didn't RTFT. Magnus, then

Astronica · 02/12/2018 13:25

Magnus is my favourite - love this! Also like Jasper, Alistair, Angus.

Eviecee · 02/12/2018 13:29

I know of 4 or 5 boys named Stanley and a couple of Arthurs, i like both names.

Other suggestions:

Jude
Luca (nicer than Lucas)
Reuben

CakeRattleandRoll · 02/12/2018 13:48

Love Alasdair, nn Adair.
Magnus also great, nn Mags.
