Not pregnant but was randomly discussing names with my husband who hates the name Joan. I’m very disappointed as I love it and it was top of my list of names for possible future baby.

What do you guys think of the name?

Coldhandscoldheart · 02/10/2018 21:21

Really like it, but wouldn’t choose it.
I’ve only known nice Joans.
Might choose something that Joan could be a shortening for.

muminmanchester · 02/10/2018 21:22

I love it. It was my grandma's name and it's on my list for this pregnancy, should it be a girl. I know a Joanie if that's any better for you Dh?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/10/2018 21:22

Frumpy dowdy and harsh.

DC18 · 02/10/2018 21:31

I really can't imagine a little girl named Joan. It's a very bland, middle aged office worker name imo x

DickensianHysteric · 02/10/2018 21:32

I love it! I know a toddler Joan, nicknamed Joanie.

greendale17 · 02/10/2018 21:34

Horrible m, brash name. Hate it

daisypond · 02/10/2018 21:34

I really like it. I think its time has come again, a bit like Mary. I only know a couple of Joans - both are in their 80s. It sounds very fresh for a baby now.

LeeMiller · 02/10/2018 21:35

Joan/Joanie is a bit of a hipster baby name at the moment, same as Jean/Jeanie.

IAmALamp · 02/10/2018 21:44

It’s lovely.

PierreBezukov · 02/10/2018 21:47

I don't like it.

But having said that, I've only ever known nice Joans.

AlecOrAlonzo · 02/10/2018 21:54

I know a few. It's really popular where I live. Not hipster at all but just haven't ever moved on from traditional names. I think it's really nice and Joni/Joanie are lovely nn.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/10/2018 21:55

Nope. It's like choosing Brenda, Kathleen or Deirdre.

frogface69 · 02/10/2018 21:59

Love it.

tartanscot · 02/10/2018 22:06

No. Far too outdated, sorry.

Thurlow · 02/10/2018 22:09

Really quite fancied a Joanna nn Joanie when we were expecting DC2

RiverTam · 02/10/2018 22:11

Awful. Some names went out of fashion for a reason.

I grew up with a Joan and she loathed her name. Changed it as soon as she could.

somersetblue · 02/10/2018 22:22

Hehe had to reply as this is my name. Still never met a Joan under the age of fifty but I’ve loved my name. Only annoying thing is I get lots of ‘Jo’ or ‘Jane’ and I’m always spelling it out (as people think I should be 80 with this name).
It’s a strong characterful name and I wouldn’t change it and yes nearest dearest call me ‘Joany’ (but that is a bit wet tbh).
If it wasn’t my name I’d consider it for bump. It will be weird for me if there’s a new generation of Joans as I’ve liked it’s uniqueness!

somersetblue · 02/10/2018 22:25

And for some reason I’ve always felt it’s completely different from Joanne or Joanna which always seemed a bit ‘common’ in comparison!

DramaAlpaca · 02/10/2018 23:18

No, I really don't like it.

Cosmoa · 02/10/2018 23:25

Really hate it. Sounds like moan.

SyrilSneer · 02/10/2018 23:25

Awful. My 50 odd year old sister is named Joan and it was outdated even then. She hates it.

PlinkPlink · 02/10/2018 23:26

Love it. Always reminds me of Joan Jett... she kicks ass.

donajimena · 02/10/2018 23:32

I really like it. I have also only known nice Joans

Picknickers · 03/10/2018 00:38

Prefer Jean or Joni. Not quite as harsh.

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/10/2018 00:43

I really can't imagine a little girl named Joan. It's a very bland, middle aged office worker name imo

Funnily enough the only Joan’s I know are middle aged office workers
