Phoenix/Jonah - for a girl?

username93 · 25/09/2018 20:43

I really like unisex names that are more commonly used for boys for a girl -

What do you think about these names for a girl (Phoenix or Jonah)?

I'm on the fence with whether they're TOO masculine or whether they could suit a girl.

Opinions? Smile

You might get away with Phoenix but Jonah for a girl is dreadful. Joanie is nice.

Emmageddon · 25/09/2018 20:47

Scary Spice's daughter is called Phoenix.
Jonah is definitely a boy's name - well, in the Bible, Jonah was a man anyway.

WhenIWasAYoungWarthog · 25/09/2018 20:47

I’m not sure Jonah is unisex. I think there’s some really lovely naturey unisex names - River, Devon, Tor, Bryher, Rowan

sunshineandshowers21 · 25/09/2018 20:48

i think phoenix could work for a girl - i know of a few who are boys, but i could imagine a little girl being called that - but i think jonah is too masculine.

Nellyelora · 25/09/2018 20:49

Phoenix is unisex imo.

Jonah is outrightly a boys name, like William or Jonathan

Kintan · 25/09/2018 20:50

Jonah is not a unisex name. Phoenix is nice though :)

Hernamewasl0la · 25/09/2018 20:53

Don’t like either but as pps have said Jonah just simply isn’t unisex at all

InfiniteCurve · 25/09/2018 21:00

Nope,Jonah is not unisex.

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2018 21:01

Jonah is most definitely a boys' name.

I suppose Phoenix could be used for either.

Neither of them are my cup of tea.

TeeBee · 25/09/2018 21:07

I thought they were both boy's names.

Dentista · 25/09/2018 21:09

Jonah isn't unisex. It's a boys name.

Do you like Joanna?

And to the pp above - Bryher isn't unisex, surely? It's lovely, but I've only ever heard of female Bryhers.

Singlenotsingle · 25/09/2018 21:10

You can call her Joan a bit 50s) but not Jonah). Jonah and the whale?

LuluBellaBlue · 25/09/2018 21:13

I like both for girls names, but then I don’t seem to agree with most of the mn baby name suggestions Blush

Glumglowworm · 25/09/2018 21:35

Jonah is not unisex it’s a boy’s name.

Phoenix is unisex

Sungura · 25/09/2018 21:47

Go with Phoenix. Jonah's for a lad. If you want more suggestions, ask.

MewithaC · 25/09/2018 22:01

Phoenix could be either. Jonah is as unisex as Brian.

Eeevvvveee · 26/09/2018 06:28

Jonah isn't unisex, and Phoenix is really Z list celeb to me

PasswordRejection · 26/09/2018 10:13

I met an American woman a few years ago whose name is pronounced "John-a", not sure how it's spelt. She's probably in her late 30s now. I seem to remember her saying it was either German or Scandinavian if that's any help!

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/09/2018 10:26

Phoenix is way to celeb for my tastes. And Jonah - no.

I have an ex-colleague on FB and she has two DDs called Bryce and Elliot (Ellie).

They're boys' names to me, but they may interest you.

user14869556378 · 26/09/2018 11:49

Not only are they more commonly known as boys names but they are really really out there names, the combination is a bit too full on for me!

LeeMiller · 26/09/2018 18:14

Agree with pp, Phoenix could possibly be unisex but Jonah is definitely not, in the UK at least. It's like calling a girl Joseph.

IsabelleSE19 · 26/09/2018 18:26

Phoenix maybe - but Jonah no. What's wrong with Joanna? Sounds very similar.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 26/09/2018 18:30

Jonah is a boy's name.

Phoenix could be either, if you like the name (I can't get past the 90s Spice Girl associations but that is probably unfair)

FuzzBallMushroomP · 26/09/2018 18:39

But Jonah isn't a unisex name.
Joan, Joni?
Phoenix is ok but makes me think of Mel B.

MrsMarigold · 26/09/2018 18:48

What about Stevie?
