Could Joyce make a comeback?

I personally love the name and it is significant in our family, but I don't want my child to hate it! Could it make a comeback...and when?!

Sophronia · 25/09/2018 11:26

I think it could. I prefer Joy though.

Pemba · 25/09/2018 11:38

It is from my parents' generation (born 1930' and 40s). I don't really find it an attractive name at all, and can't really imagine a comeback

I agree that Joy is much better.

JingsMahBucket · 25/09/2018 11:43

I actually like the name quite a bit. For some reason I thought it had a root name but I'm not sure what. You know, like how Betty's root is Elizabeth.

Off to Google... (when I should be working)

Jitters22 · 25/09/2018 11:43

I'd love it to as it was my grandmother's name. Well Adelia Joyce actually but in common with the times she was known by her middle name.

She was born in 1903 .

Why not give it as a middle name?

shumway · 25/09/2018 11:44

It's sweet. I had an aunt called Joyce.

JingsMahBucket · 25/09/2018 11:45

"The name Joyce is a contemporary given-name used for females and rarely used for males. As a family-name, it derived from the Old French Masculine name Josse, which derived from the Latin name Iudocus, the Latinized form of the Breton name Judoc meaning 'lord'. The name became rare after the 14th century, but later revived as a female given-name, which derived from the Middle English joise meaning 'rejoice'."

Interesting! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyce_(name)

Liverpool23 · 25/09/2018 12:01

I'm sorry, I am another one who prefers Joy however I never could imagine Edith coming back and it has so you could start the trend.... :)

jadedgranger · 25/09/2018 12:12

Was thinking we could nickname her Josie if it really doesn't make a comeback

Prefer the name Joy, as others have said.

hungryhippie · 25/09/2018 14:06

I think its really cute

StripyDeckchair · 25/09/2018 14:12

I like it, though it does make me think of the one who has got to be behind all those deaths in Midsummer Murders. Joyce joins an art class, suddenly three participants are slaughtered. Joyce goes on a spa day, etc.

That weird association aside I think it has a happy sound and could be due a come back. I actually prefer it to Joy. I think Josephine, nn Josie is even more lovely.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/09/2018 15:07

Any name has the potential to come back.
20 years ago I think most people would have laughed at the idea of the name Arthur. Now you can't put a pin head between them and If it doesn't come back fine too. At least she'll be the only one in her class

newrubylane · 25/09/2018 16:12

Oh, I think it will. it's a sort of forties vibe to me, and they are surely the next wave of names due a come back. I already know (two different) people with girls named Audrey and Sylvia, which (to me) sound like they are from the same sort of period?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 25/09/2018 16:19

There’s a young Joyce in our street.

glagdy · 25/09/2018 16:20

No!!! AngryAngryAngryAngryAngry

(It's my girl choice as both my Grandmas were Joyce. Don't you fucking DARE bring it back.)

Pemba · 25/09/2018 17:05

But Audrey and Sylvia are nice, Joyce isn't. I also like Barbara and Pamela and even Patricia. Imagine they were new names from a different culture, forget the older lady associations, and you'll see they're nice. But Joyce still isn't. Sorry!

AnyaMoondial · 25/09/2018 17:17

My friend nearly called her baby Joyce last year. Maybe it’s already on the way up.

DaniC18 · 25/09/2018 20:02

I prefer Joy or Josie rather than Joyce.

Peachbubble · 25/09/2018 20:20

Definitely prefer Joy to Joyce

ZebraKid71 · 25/09/2018 20:42

Yes! I really like it! I know a toddler Joyce, it's lovely.

MikeUniformMike · 25/09/2018 20:42

Another vote for Joy. as a mn.

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2018 20:54

It's OK, but I prefer Joy.

Thighofrelief · 25/09/2018 20:56

What about Josephine? Not Joyce for me, sorry.

TempsPerdu · 25/09/2018 20:56

I could see Joy becoming a popular middle name, a la Grace. Not so much Joyce though - it just feels more dated somehow.

areyoubeingserviced · 25/09/2018 21:00

I know a Joyce who shortens her name to Joy.
Joyce is ok but I prefer Joy
