Hi what do you think of Gael for a little boy ?

Pronounced Gay-el or Gail? It's a no either way from me. Sorry.

HopeGarden · 24/09/2018 21:10

I think that Gael looks a lot like a variant spelling of the girls name Gail.

BeeMyBaby · 24/09/2018 21:11

It looks nice written down but if you said 'Gail' then I would be confused unless you or your DH were from a non British background.

IamAporcupine · 24/09/2018 21:11

I love it, but I am very biased - it's my son's name!

IamAporcupine · 24/09/2018 21:11

ps - totally outing myself to the very few people that might know me! Grin

egginacup · 24/09/2018 21:12

It’s a lovely Spanish name but I fear he would get teased in a British school, sorry.

sleepyhead · 24/09/2018 21:12

Gaelan is a boy's name (not personally keen to be honest)

IamAporcupine · 24/09/2018 21:12

I have to warn you though - very few people will pronounce it correctly

cricketmum84 · 24/09/2018 21:13

I read Gael as Jail. Nuff said (sorry).

LordOfTheFleas · 24/09/2018 21:13

I like it!

Mama1980 · 24/09/2018 21:14

I love it.

villainousbroodmare · 24/09/2018 21:15

I think it looks lovely written down, but there would be likely confusion about pronunciation. I'm an Irish speaker and would pronounce it Gwale, and would take it to mean "Irishman". Is that what you'd intend?

colditz · 24/09/2018 21:15

No.

ROSE2017Rose · 24/09/2018 21:20

Thank you all. Yes pronounced Ga-el. Do you think he would get teased?

OP posts:
colditz · 24/09/2018 21:25

Without a doubt

ButterflyWitch · 24/09/2018 21:26

Absolute no-no if in Scotland. And yes probably also teased in other parts of Uk (presume pronounced gale/Gail). For me the meaning is to do with Scottish history eh I am a gael /speak Gaelic etc etc (not explained v well, sorry)

DaniC18 · 24/09/2018 22:05

It reads as Gail to me. Sorry x

starzig · 24/09/2018 22:09

I really like it but he may get a bit bullied depending on the area or school.

IamAporcupine · 24/09/2018 22:09

@ROSE2017Rose - mine didn't get any teasing. He has to repeat it several times and some find it difficult, but once they know how to say it, that's the end of it.

starzig · 24/09/2018 22:09

I would read it the same as Gail too.

BertrandRussell · 24/09/2018 22:18

Why?

IamAporcupine · 24/09/2018 22:22

@BertrandRussell - what do you mean 'why?'

Mossend · 24/09/2018 22:27

I'm in Scotland and know a few Gael's. All female

Xiaoxiong · 24/09/2018 22:35

I know two people named Gaël but both are French. Assuming you are in the UK you might consider Giles? I know it's the British version of Gilles rather than Gaël but it sounds quite similar and doesn't have the same baggage and difficulty with pronunciation in this country as Gael might.

olympicsrock · 24/09/2018 22:48

I know a male Gael. No problem with it.
