Name rhyming with dog's name?!

Sorry, this is a ridiculous one Grin

We found out today we are having a baby girl and one of the names we love is Maisie. However, we have a dog called Daisy!

I was talking to my mum about it and she said she doesn't think it's a big deal, and obviously our dog won't be around forever, but I don't know. Part of me thinks it would be a shame not to use a name we love just because of it, but part of me wonders if it is a silly idea.

Any thoughts?!

I don't think I'd go for it, but might be because I'm a bit old fashioned rather than the rhyming thing. The most important thing is how you, her parents, feel about it.

My family hated my daughter's name but that didn't deter us because we love it. They have got used to it (mostly).

ScreamingValenta · 22/09/2018 20:39

I don't think anyone will notice/think anything of it.

Playdonut · 22/09/2018 20:40

It's really not a big deal. Use Maisie it's beautiful and quite unusual too.

Sungura · 22/09/2018 20:43

I guess if you don't really mind, use it. Me, I'd be worried about confusing the dog! 😃
Maybe some other names will grow on you while Daisy is prancing around. 🐶🌼❓

Celebelly · 22/09/2018 20:49

I was thinking about the dog confusion aspect too! But we do tend to call her a pet name more often than her real name, so maybe she won't care...

It's a minefield!

I would. Even if people are a bit surprised at first (and I'd be surprised anyway) they'll soon get over it. Plus the little girl will be around for about 70 years longer than the dog...

MonaChopsis · 22/09/2018 23:19

DDs name was one middle consonant away from the dogs name (think Lacy & Lady). No one raised an eyebrow. It'll be fine.

wineandcatsandlego · 22/09/2018 23:25

I know someone with 3 daughters, Maisie Gracey and Lacey. Very broad accent, each name sounds almost identical. No one else so much as raised an eyebrow. Go for it if you like it

Quangot · 22/09/2018 23:30

It's fine and Maisie is a lovely name.

Quantumblue · 22/09/2018 23:40

We have a Dave (ds) and a Daiz (dog). The dog arrived after ds. With hindsight I would have given the dog a different name! Usually whichever one we call the other one looks up. It's not a big deal but annoying sometimes.
However Maisie it is such a lovely name and as she grows up she might enjoy rhyming with the dog.

schooltripwoes · 22/09/2018 23:45

I'd say don't do it. A distant relative has a dog and two daughters named Daisy, Poppy and Lily (not rhyming, of course, but all the same 'theme'). We can never remember which 'flower' is the dog and which are the girls Blush.

WendyTheWestie · 23/09/2018 09:12

My only concern would be the dog getting confused - can you try calling out "Maisie!" and see if the dog responds?

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 23/09/2018 09:21

I wouldn't do it. Apart from anything else, your dog would have a better name than your daughter!

silverliningsa · 23/09/2018 09:31

I think it's fine, doubt anyone else would even notice!

Celebelly · 23/09/2018 09:33

Thanks all!

I think we will keep it on the list for now. I tried calling it out in a normal voice and dog wasn't bothered (we usually use our 'dog' voices for communicating with her so I guess she just doesn't listen otherwise Grin) so that's good at least!

I'd worry about confusing your dog too!

FlippertyJibbet88 · 23/09/2018 14:10

My DD's nickname rhymes with our dog's name and it confuses the hell out of him! He's always coming when I'm calling her and trying to figure out what I'm asking when I'm trying to give her instructions. For that reason, I'd maybe think of something a bit different. Having a new baby can be stressful enough for a dog without the added confusion!

villainousbroodmare · 23/09/2018 14:15

The dog's name is more human than the child's then! Like someone I know who has a dog called Seamus and a son called Max. I personally think Maisie is over-cutesy and inelegant and I would not use it. But I'd say the the same about Molly and that is also well liked on here.

SweatyFretty · 23/09/2018 14:18

I've never had a dog. Can they be renamed?

Sunflower321 · 23/09/2018 15:17

Poor dog!

Noodge · 23/09/2018 15:22

I think it's cute!
But yes, you'll be cooing to your baby and the dog will come running.
You'll be shouting for your toddler to stop doing something, and the dog will think she's in trouble
You'll confuse people in conversation 'ooh Maisie did her first wee in the toilet today '
'wow! I wish my dog could do that!'
Etc etc.
Grin
I'd still do it. :)

Noodge · 23/09/2018 15:23

Yes sweaty they can be renamed and usually adapt to it very quickly :)
Not sure I would in this case though.

tissuebox · 23/09/2018 15:30

Maisie and Daisy, lets face it, it’s a children’s tv series or set of books. Go for it OP and make yourself a fortune!

Celebelly · 23/09/2018 16:34

My hope is they will turn into a crime-solving duo and travel the land solving mysteries.
