Aisling or Clara?

Torn between these two for a girl. Which do you prefer?

(Aisling is an Irish name pronounced Ash-ling, meaning dream).

I like both but not the spelling of Aisling. The pronunciation is lovely, however.

MrsGB2225 · 22/09/2018 11:57

Clara

flumpybear · 22/09/2018 11:58

Ashling- so many Clara's these days - plus reminds people of long distance Clara from pigeon street 😇

HelenaJustina · 22/09/2018 11:59

Aisling. Biased as it is the name of a family member. Spell it like you have in your original post though and not phonetically!

BerriesandLeaves · 22/09/2018 12:00

Clara

CallMeRachel · 22/09/2018 12:02

Clara although I prefer Cara as it's a bit of a tongue tie

I'm not keen on the look of the name Aisling, I'd imagine most non-Irish people will assume it's pronounced 'Aye-sling'.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 22/09/2018 12:18

I really like both but would choose Aisling.

ladycarlotta · 22/09/2018 12:25

I knew an Irish Aisling who pronounced it more Ash-leen, but either way it's lovely. People will get their heads around the spelling.

Clara is beautiful too and is on my list. You can't go wrong really, although my one reservation with Clara is that there aren't any obvious nicknames, while it's easy to shorten Aisling if you ever wanted.

Peachbubble · 22/09/2018 14:55

Clara is much nicer

Hernamewasl0la · 22/09/2018 15:02

Clara

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 22/09/2018 15:05

clara. think it is so pretty.
And I think you'd be correcting and explaining how to say Aisling your poor DD's whole life and it would be tedious

LeeMiller · 22/09/2018 16:29

Clara is lovely but having a surge in popularity, I think.

Ashling is nice if you have an Irish connection and (depending where you live) aren't bothered by correcting spelling/explaining pronunciation.

dancingbee · 23/09/2018 00:48

A good friend of mine is called Aisling and has zero Irish connections. Everyone always thinks she says Ashley and she has to correct them and spell it out. I remember it taking me a while to remember when we first met as I'd never heard the name before. Personally I think it'd be irritating to have to constantly correct people and explain that you're not Irish and it's not spelt 'ash'.

LivLemler · 23/09/2018 05:32

Changing the spelling of Aisling (phonetic in Irish, and an actual word in our vocabulary meaning dream as well as a name as OP mentioned) would be like calling your son Ben but spelling it Behn. It's not the most difficult of Irish names for English speakers anyway.

I knew an Irish Aisling who pronounced it more Ash-leen, but either way it's lovely.

Probably more of an accent thing - in some Irish accents, "ing" is pronounced closer to "een" in lots of words.

Emelene · 23/09/2018 06:05

Both lovely but I would go with Clara. Such an elegant name and so easy o spell

MeltingSnowflake · 23/09/2018 06:13

Clara! So lovely.

Sophronia · 23/09/2018 07:10

Aisling

BillywigSting · 23/09/2018 07:14

Aisling

Clara reminds me too much of doctor who

dinosaurkisses · 23/09/2018 16:06

In Ireland at the moment Aisling has turned into a slang term for someone who is a bit basic- there's even a book called OMG What A Complete Aisling. It's quite an 80's/early 90's name.

I love Clara- very classic

Sungura · 23/09/2018 16:11

Clara. It's a classic. Beautiful.

ZebraKid71 · 24/09/2018 20:23

I prefer Aisling, but know of two who pronounce it differently to each other (ashling and ashleen).

jadedgranger · 25/09/2018 16:35

I thought it would be pronounced Ay-ling which sounds lovely IMO, not sure about Ash-ling though

Elephantinacravat · 25/09/2018 16:37

Definitely Aisling.

KiplingAngelCake · 25/09/2018 16:48

Clara

bridgetreilly · 25/09/2018 17:20

Clara by a mile.
