Heidi

Swishswish26 · 22/09/2018 15:44

Must you use Rose as a middle name? Every child seems to have a middle name of Rose or May.
Heidi is the best name on your list.

Courtney555 · 22/09/2018 15:58

Agree, Heidi is the best on the list. Don't like it much either though.

With the other poster who prefers Harriet, and Hattie is a lovely abbreviation.

passwordfailure · 22/09/2018 16:17

Harper Lee's real name was Nelle. Could someone please write to VB and let her know?

LeeMiller · 22/09/2018 16:34

Heidi

Agustarella · 22/09/2018 17:00

Not real names. Heidi is the closest, but I don't like using the diminutive form as the official given name.

00100001 · 22/09/2018 21:35

Heidi is a real name Confused

Glaciferous · 22/09/2018 22:13

Heidi is a diminutive/nickname, like Meg for Margaret or Liz for Elizabeth. But agree it's the best.

TatianaLarina · 22/09/2018 22:38

Some diminutives become established as real names, Natasha for Natalya for example. Heidi is long established as name in itself, and there aren’t many people these days called Adelheid.

00100001 · 23/09/2018 08:52

What is Heidi a diminutive of?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/09/2018 09:00

Harper.

Heidi reminds me of KK.

TatianaLarina · 23/09/2018 10:19

Adelheid.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2018 12:32

Heidi. Harlow is a town in Essex and Harper is a surname.

m0therofdragons · 23/09/2018 12:42

Heidi is a name in its own right.

The name Heidi is a French baby name. In French the meaning of the name Heidi is: Nobility. French form of the Old German Adalheidis, a compound of 'athal' (noble) and 'haida' (hood). Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, was named after Queen Adelaide, 19th century King William IV's consort.

It's not a nickname but even if it was, only mnetters care.

HeronLanyon · 23/09/2018 12:50

I know an adult Heidi (40s). It immediately lost all connotations of mountains goats plaits etc and quickly became simply her name and a great one too ! Harper seems affected less so in the USA where it is more recognised as a name nd not solely celeb or author links. Harlow doesn’t even seem a forename and I just think of town. I would assume conception in Harlow type reason. !

HeronLanyon · 23/09/2018 13:02

**BridgetReilly thank you so much for a delicious joke above - never heard it before - still laughing.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/09/2018 13:05

Definitely Heidi

florascotia2 · 23/09/2018 13:14

Heidi is a nickname made popular by Johanna Spyri's novel. It is short for Adelheid.
The French form of Adelheid is Adelaide (Ah- deh- la- eed or Ah -day-la-eed) - sorry I can't do accents on this keyboard.

Most baby name websites are rubbish, but this one is more reliable than most:
www.behindthename.com/name/heidi

And this website is really accurate, as is the book it's based on:
www.oxfordreference.com/abstract/10.1093/acref/9780198610601.001.0001/acref-9780198610601-e-4551?rskey=XyGnQF&result=3181

As previous poster said, Harper Lee only used that name as a pen name. She called herself 'Nelle'.

user1495884620 · 23/09/2018 13:17

Take a google streetview tour of Harlow before you use it for a name.

Agustarella · 23/09/2018 13:35

In German, the final e in Adelaide is pronounced, at least if the Beethoven song is anything to go by. I think Adelaide is prettier than Adelheid, and Heidi works fine as a nickname.

rainingcatsanddog · 23/09/2018 13:47

I think Harlow is popular with US celebs because they don't know that area of Essex or they are thinking of Jean Harlow. If you are in the UK it's best to avoid imo.

I'm increasingly hearing Harper and first thing I'd assume was Beckham-fan. Would that put you off?

Heidi makes me think of Heidi Klum (not a bad association ) and Heidi the novel. Not a fan of stuff like Little House on the Prairie etc

PestoSurfissimos · 23/09/2018 13:53

Harlow is grim, sorry 😐

RoseMartha · 23/09/2018 14:22

Heidi

Sungura · 23/09/2018 16:32

Heidi. Best of three. Ask if you want more suggestions.

KnotsInMay · 23/09/2018 16:50

Not Harlow. Harlow is beyond awful.

Everyone will assume she was conceived there (isn’t that the reason people give children place names?)

People will make crap jokes.
