TokyoSushi · 17/09/2018 23:14

Nay, mega nay!

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 17/09/2018 23:14

So the obvious thought is Kipling but I like it, even if he’s more than likely to be nicknamed “Ruddy”.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/09/2018 23:14

Nay.

I think it's the sound of it out loud.

Rud Yard.

Sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 17/09/2018 23:15

Good grief, no.

kiltedsheep · 17/09/2018 23:16

It's a nay for me. Too many colonialist, imperialist connotations. Plus I bloody hate 'If' - Christ knows why everyone seems to like it so much.

That said, my auntie loves Kipling and swears I need to give him another chance. And I did love the Jungle Book.

Shadow1234 · 17/09/2018 23:17

No, sorry. 😬

Cobblersandhogwash · 17/09/2018 23:32

Love it. Rudy is super cool nn too.

Kipling was a great writer. Colonialist sure but nonetheless.

kiltedsheep · 17/09/2018 23:38

@Cobblersandhogwash I hadn't thought about the possibility of Rudy! Rudy does seem a pretty cool nn and might compensate for the colonialist overtones. Just think of all the dub music you could play. 'Stop your messin' around...' 😎

Sunflower321 · 18/09/2018 06:51

I like Rudyard, but the potential nickname Rudy is awful - it doesn't work in English, sounding like Rude-y!

TatianaLarina · 18/09/2018 07:27

It’s actually quite a nice name but I wouldn’t call my child after a racist.

Firenight · 18/09/2018 07:32

I love it.

But given the hatred for colonial history at the moment, it could be a tough one to land a kid with, with the Kipling connotation. Brilliant writer though he was.

TatianaLarina · 18/09/2018 07:34

I wouldn’t call it a hatred of colonial history, just an awareness that the UK’s colonial history and attitudes are shameful.

Sungura · 18/09/2018 08:47

Nay. There are far better choices that don't sound so clunky.

whatshappenednow · 18/09/2018 09:01

Absolutely love it.

Rudy will be the coolest name in school.

As for the colonialist connotations, if we always ignored names that were once used by someone who did something we didn’t like there would be no names in use at all!

Sunflower321 · 18/09/2018 09:04

Rudy will be the coolest name in school.

Are you ironic? Rudy, Rude-y? Really?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/09/2018 09:06

Sounds like "Roger Hard" to me. Sorry don't like it.

Rudy on it's own is cute though.

GimbleInTheWabe · 18/09/2018 09:34

Well going against the crowd here OP but I kinda like it! Wasn't aware of the Colonialist overtones bough which may have put me off. But then again there's probably some Rogers who have a lot to answer for too, and Oliver's and Marks... ya get my drift.

thedishonthecoffeetable · 18/09/2018 11:08

Kipling's parents named him after a lake where they met. It's in Staffordshire.

Doyoumind · 18/09/2018 11:14

No. As PPs have said it's absolutely linked to Kipling as it wasn't a name before him and there's too much colonialism etc tied in with it. Secondly a Rudy will get bullied because of his name.

HPLikecraft · 18/09/2018 11:22

It wasn't even Kipling's first name; it was a middle name, given to him to commemorate a special place for his parents, so not even a 'proper' name.

Rogers who have a lot to answer for too, and Oliver's and Marks... ya get my drift

Of course, but there has only been one famous Rudyard, so the name will always be inextricably linked to Kipling.

HPLikecraft · 18/09/2018 11:24

And it just doesn't sound nice!

Sorry, OP

lynsey91 · 18/09/2018 11:26

Definitely no. Poor kid

flapjackfairy · 18/09/2018 11:28

My daughter's wedding reception was at Rudyard sailing club overlooking the lake ( obviously )

flapjackfairy · 18/09/2018 11:30

Don't think his parents had a particularly happy union sadly . Though I digress . !
As a name it is a no from me sorry .

kiltedsheep · 18/09/2018 18:28

I hadn't realised Kipling's first name was actually Joseph! Cheers @HPLikecraft . Ya learn summit new every day.
