Nora for a girl or Rune for a boy?

Getting ahead of myself as i'm not pregnant yet, but what do you think of these names?
Rune is norwegian just like my dp and is pronounced like rune-ah (sounds lovely with the accent) and we plan to go back soon.
And i just love Nora for a girl as old fashioned as it is.
What do you think?

I like Nora for a girl.

I image Rune would sound nice in its native tongue, but if you are living in Britain he will get called 'Roon' more often than not, which is something to think about

ClaraBanana7 · 17/09/2018 22:51

@SleepForTheWeek thank you! You have no idea how much i want a little girl called Nora, it's actually ridiculous.
I first heard Rune in Norway when i fell in love with it, but you're right, hearing him called Roon would drive me a little bit mental.

I don't like Nora at all, sorry. To me it's old fashioned but not in a good way.

Rune pronounced the Norwegian way is very nice.

ClaraBanana7 · 17/09/2018 23:00

@DramaAlpaca lol, so many people have told me they hate Nora. Hopefully my little girl will be so cute she'll own the name (or i'll change my mind and she can have a more modern name lol)

I love the name Nora!

Choccywoccyhooha · 18/09/2018 01:19

I love them both, rather a lot actually. Nora is very sweet, and I'd never heard of Rune before, but it's an utterly gorgeous name.

AnyaMoondial · 18/09/2018 06:48

Love Nora!

Ohyesiam · 18/09/2018 06:50

There’s Ruan, it’s a Cornish name I think. Pronounced roo an .

BertrandRussell · 18/09/2018 06:53

Nora is actually lovely.

But Rune is an English word pronounced Roon, so that is how people will say it. All his life. And it is a bit like calling a child Tarot or horoscope!

Sungura · 18/09/2018 08:53

It sounds like you're pretty satisfied with both names. Nothing is wrong with either IMO. What matters is your happiness, and hopefully your children will adore their names.

ZebraKid71 · 18/09/2018 09:07

Nora is lovely. Old fashioned but I actually know quite a few baby Noras recently.

Never heard Rune but I like it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/09/2018 09:48

Well you're only going to have one or the other so I don't get the "or" bit. You'd never have to make a choice between a girl or boys name, would youConfused

Nora is awful. Old fashioned in a dowdy uncool way.
I quite like Rune.

ClaraBanana7 · 18/09/2018 10:02

@Awwlookatmybabyspider Sorry, but using 'or' I meant: if a girl, Nora or if a boy, Rune? Not that I'll have a choice based on which name I like the most or anything.

Nora is beautiful. I have also met a few Orla’s lately which I think is cute.

ClaraBanana7 · 18/09/2018 10:18

@Pumpkinpie2018 I love the name Orla too! Have a couple of relatives called Orla, such a wonderful name.
Also toying with Katja and Freja for a girl, i love those sorts of names

I love Nora !!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 18/09/2018 10:42

Sorry I hate Nora with a passion. Nora Batty.

SinglePringle · 18/09/2018 10:45

I hate Nora so much it makes me (I accept unreasonably) think it’s cruel to give it to a child. I really dislike it.

Nora-titsoff
Nora the Bora
Nora Batty

Rune is lovely.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 18/09/2018 10:48

Nora is only acceptable with an H on the end else it brings to mind Scottish pensioners

Rune; no. Just no. It would make folk think his parents were into Viking role play and that he spends his weekends on the battlefield carrying daddy’s chain mail vests about and playing in a wooden longboat.

Sorry OP.

Mendingfences · 18/09/2018 10:55

Have you considered Runar? A bit more English language friendly

VeryBerrySeptember · 18/09/2018 10:57

I think the issue of rune being a word in its own right is worth thinking about.

Plus I would think hippy connotations before Norwegian, on a par with something like Indigo maybe .

Theg00dwife · 18/09/2018 10:58

I really like both names. I like the Norah spelling better. Lovely names 😊

BackIntoTheSun · 18/09/2018 11:01

Love Nora ❤

Lunde · 18/09/2018 11:04

Nora also has very strong Norwegian and Scandi connections. It is right on trend at the moment as it is currently the 2nd most popular name in Norway.

GulliverUnravels · 18/09/2018 11:07

I really, really like Norah with an h - the other spelling brings to mind wrinkly tights Nora Batty for me too. I like the meanings too: "honour" in the Anglo-Saxon tradition and "light" in the Semitic one.
Haven't heard Rune before but I wouldn't be totally put off by the potential for mispronunciation. Surely most people are introduced verbally before they see a person's name written down. Many years ago I thought my friend's name was "Chevaunne" for a good 6 months before I realised it was (obviously, in hindsight) "Siobhan". It'll mostly be Drs receptionists and teachers at the start of the school year who see it written before they heard it spoken.
