Obscure literary names

Our dd is called Ayla after the main character from 'The Clan of the Cave Bear', which is extremely rare, but similar enough to names like Isla and Ava that it's not too hard for people to accept. Pronounced Ay-la.

We have dc2 coming any day now and our first mistake was not finding out the sex, so now we have to find both a male and female literary name.

I have a few I am attached to but my partner would prefer some more options. We are trying to avoid the more known names like those from Harry Potter books or classic literature, and instead go for names people likely won't have heard of.

Feel free to throw any suggestions this way!!

I’m suggesting Jory for a boy and Audrina for a girl.

Gilgamesh

Leland · 17/09/2018 20:45

Well, what do you read, though? Surely you’re not going to call your baby after a character in a book you haven’t read? Apart from it being a quite odd idea, you risk discovering they’re a necrophiliac or a Tory in the last chapter.

doodledott · 17/09/2018 21:06

Julian? Fantastic five

doodledott · 17/09/2018 21:12

Famous Five, I mean!

HerondaleDucks · 17/09/2018 21:17

A vote for Ranec! I used to want a boy called Ranec after the character from the Mammoth Hunters.
Sabriel, Emma, Lorcan, Richard, Darcy, Sebastian...

FayKnights · 17/09/2018 21:20

Rosette - The Lollipop Shoes, I adore that name.
Congrats by the way 😁

Enidblyton1 · 17/09/2018 21:23

I’m with Leland. Surely you should think of the books/characters you like.
A bit meaningless to chose a name from a book you’ve never read?!

Leland · 17/09/2018 21:28

And Julian in the Famous Five is a power-crazed wanker.

Blaming you enidblyton1 Grin

DonnaSheridan · 17/09/2018 21:34

Momo from a children's book of the same name. The character is a girl but I think that name is kind of unisex

MotherOfDragons27 · 17/09/2018 21:46

There's an Ayla in my son's class. It's not that unusual here.

Lyra is nice.

littlebillie · 17/09/2018 22:14

Tory reference how strange Hmm

kettleonplease · 18/09/2018 05:53

Ayla isn't a Sophie or Olivia but it's not unusual? I know 3 little Ayla's and it was 128 in the rankings according to Names Dark Greener.

Anyway...that aside;

Julian (Famous Five)
Oakley (Goodnight Mister Tom)
Noddy
Hagrid (HP)
Ron (HP)
Aslan
Danny

Jemima (Beatrix Potter)
Hermione (HP)
Liesel (The Book Thief)

I agree, it would help tremendously to know what books you read. These names are all from literary masterpieces, some fans v s of mine. The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow, for instance.

DorasBob · 18/09/2018 12:22

Surely if you are going for a literary name, you should only pick a name from a book you have read and loved?

Painfully pretentious otherwise
