Help me decide on a girl's name!

Hi All,

I just cannot decide on a girl's name. My surname is Johnson, which I feel will go nicely and easily with most name choices.

I want a name that is sweet and simple and not overly trendy. My options so far are Grace (or Gracie), Alexandra, Rosa, Jessica (my son is Jordan so this option may be cute), or Maria. They're all good options, I feel, and I'm curious what others think. I mostly need ideas on first names but if any of you have first name, middle name combos that'll be helpful, also!

Thanks!

Give her her own name, not yours. Maria would be lovely as a middle name, but choose a different first name

Picknickers · 17/09/2018 22:55

I think Maria as a mn would be lovely but as a pp said, she really needs her own identity. Rosa Maria Johnson is lovely.

Maria is a very pretty name.

Other suggestions:

Freya
Marina
Louisa
Ashleigh
Kira (optional spellings)
Keeley
Hailey
Hannah
Leah
Lois
Lauren
Lorna
Leonie
Ava

Alexandra Maria would be nice.

PregnantMomma · 17/09/2018 23:27

DanceronIce, those were my thoughts, as well. I would feel weird having the same name and I've also said I want her to have her own name...but if I get desperate enough that's my last resort. Grin

Picknickers - Rosa Maria is definitely one of my favorites. The name Rosa popped into my head just a few days ago. When I read forums a lot o people think it's a name for old people! I think it's a classic, tradition name, which is the type of name I'm gunning for. I don't want a complicated, over popular, hard-to-spell name. I want it to keep it simple if you know what I mean! No offense to popular names but it's not for me.

What about Rosemary? Has an element of your name and still has Rose in it - and is a classic but definitely not popular atm.

crosstalk · 17/09/2018 23:33

Rowena?
Heroine of a great Scots novel.

I wouldn't necessarily give her your name ...

But Alexandra is great because of all the nice abbreviations - my favourite is Xander.

Enjoy your baby - and she may demand her own name ... give her a third and then she can choose between more!

RavenWings · 17/09/2018 23:35

I'd agree with cross on that actually. Love the name Maria but I'm not sold on the idea of giving her your name.

PregnantMomma · 17/09/2018 23:56

Hi crosstalk - Alexandra seems to be a well-liked name. Another poster also mentioned all the nicknames possible which is nice, also.

Rowena is a little out there for me but I appreciate the suggestion.

Thank you for your insight!

RavenWings - We have definitely been on the same page! Too bad my name is Maria, although I might not even like it if it weren't. Rosemary doesn't tickle my fancy but I do think it's pretty. That's my hairdressers name and she is lovely!

How about Eliza Marie/a Johnson?

PregnantMomma · 18/09/2018 00:12

YerAuntFanny, never thought about Eliza. It's definitely not widely used. I'd have to give that one some thought. Thanks for your helpful suggestion!

If you're called Maria then don't give your child the same name.

Rosa or alexandra gets my vote.

LoveAGoodChat · 18/09/2018 00:48

I like Alexandra Johnson, it has a smart student ring to it Grin

ShmooBooMoo · 18/09/2018 01:01

Miranda (contains an anagram of Maria so you're in there, so to speak). Not too common but very pretty imo (The name Miranda is a Latin baby name. In Latin the meaning of the name Miranda is: Worthy of admiration; wonderful. Young innocent girl in Shakespeare's The Tempest raised and educated on an isolated island by magician father).

Also, Meredith...very pretty and not over-used

Ella, Jemima or Francesca would also go well, I think.

PregnantMomma · 18/09/2018 01:41

LoveAGoodChat - I agree! Also, it's very simple, yet feminine and elegant like a pp said. Alexandra is on mumsnet's list of old-fashioned names, as are Maria and Grace. I definitely want to stay traditional or old-fashioned as some call it. Thanks for your input!

ShmooBooMoo, I considered Francesca. It's also a classic IMO. Thanks!

Jessica is really nice. Jacinta and Jacqueline, Jamila, Julia/Juliet, Jemima, all classic or nice J names. Of your choices so far, I like Rosa and Eliza the best if you don't go for a complimentary name to your son's.
