My DH and I are finding it very difficult to pick a boys names, we have two DS's already.
I do really like the name Teddy but don't know if he will hate us when he's 14!

What are your honest thoughts on the name?
TIA

It's a diminutive. You are signing the child up to a lifetime of 'oh great to meet you teddy what's that short for then?'

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 17/09/2018 16:22

Ubiquitous

Unicornandbows · 17/09/2018 16:27

We named our dog teddy..

Not too keen on it being a human name lol

Oblomov18 · 17/09/2018 16:28

Nephew has just been named Theodore. Nicknamed Teddy. I love it. But would never consider Teddy as the main name.

abos · 17/09/2018 16:36

I think Teddy is lovely, as a full name or as a nickname.

Sunflower321 · 17/09/2018 16:38

Even if we find it cute or lovely, think of a 14 year old teenager having to introduce himself as Teddy 🐻?! I find it too cute and fluffy.

bellinisurge · 17/09/2018 16:41

As a nickname? Fine. As a first name proper, I would think the parents think he is a toy or will be a baby forever. But I would never say that out loud because I'm judgy in silence.

Viviolet · 17/09/2018 17:28

Cute nn when they’re little but lumping them with an ‘improper’ name that will cause judgements, and not great ones, about them as a person before they’ve had a chance to make an impression

stressedoutpa · 17/09/2018 17:34

I think it's a great name for a dog!

IvanMashPotatoIvanDoTheTwist · 17/09/2018 17:54

I'm finding picking a boys name very difficult too. I like Teddy as a nickname but I personally wouldn't use it as a full name and prefer a 'proper' name on a birth certificate, and will give baby more options as he gets older. I know a Ted who is Edward on his BC, I really like that.

lljkk · 17/09/2018 18:00

Bit babyish but I think we make names our own. It might be perfect for him (even as a big scary teenager).

MollyHuaCha · 17/09/2018 19:55

It's a great nn.

ZebraKid71 · 17/09/2018 20:00

I don't particularly like it, and I prefer full names rather than nn on birth certificate.

However, to counter a lot of the it's childish and cutesy comments above - whilst I agree with them, the name is massively popular at the moment so by the time he is an adult there will be lots of other adult teddys so it won't seem so childlike.

Harrypotterfan1604 · 17/09/2018 20:03

Honestly when I hear teddy I think dog 😳 I’m sorry!
I did agree with other that if you want to use it then use it as a nickname while he’s young but give him a full name for when he’s older

Spudlet · 17/09/2018 20:08

Ds's proper name is Edward. He has many options for the future - Edward, Ed, Eddie, Ned, Ted, Teddy.... right now he's 2, so Teddy fits and Edward is his 'Stop that right now, sunshine' name (used in conjunction woth his surname, for maximum impact. Not that he bothers Grin).

Options are good, imo.

showmeahero · 17/09/2018 20:11

Soooooo many DCs called Teddy nowadays. Super trendy in 2016! Ted or Ned is nicer I think Smile

ThriftyMcThrifty · 17/09/2018 20:12

I love it. Is is popular for little kids right now, but I know a couple of Teds who are my age (37) and both like their name. They go by Ted at work. One is Theodore and one is Teddy on birth certificates.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/09/2018 20:12

All my Dses have friends called Teddy, ages around 20, and it feels like a totally natural name for adults (albeit young) to me. It sounds no more ‘cutesy’ - that weird mn non problem - than Harry, Robbie, Toby, Rory, Charlie etc.

NorthernRunner · 17/09/2018 20:13

I love it!

MikeUniformMike · 17/09/2018 20:28

I like Edward. Theodore is awful. Teddy was nice when it was a slightly unusual name of a footballer.

Sessy19 · 17/09/2018 21:54

I used to be quite fond of Teddy....but now it’s really insipid. Weak and flimsy...that’s what I think when someone says Teddy. JMHO, sorry

Giantbabybump24 · 17/09/2018 21:58

Awful twee and overused

namechangedtoday15 · 17/09/2018 22:07

Very very popular.

And I don't get it's use as a nickname, with the intention of using a "proper" name in later life. People (as a pp said) go from Johnny / Stevie / Katie to John / Steve / Kate - you're just losing the "ie". It's completely different to going from Teddy to Edward to Theo. They're very different names.

Sunflower321 · 17/09/2018 22:31

I agree! You might as well call your child John and use Teddy as a nickname.

MrBull · 17/09/2018 22:38

An adult Teddy isn't that unusual. I have known an old man with the name and it didn't sound twee. Give them Edward or Theodore as the full name though.
