I like the name Anwen and thought it was pronounced Ann-when but then someone said it is Onn-when , which is correct please?

I’d say Ann-when but I find a lot of Welsh is like French, it’s more about the accent that makes it sound correct than necessarily saying it ‘correctly’ if that makes any sense.

LegArmpits · 16/09/2018 09:14

In my south-walian accent I'd say it as Anwen.

Howtodeal · 16/09/2018 09:14

I'm Welsh (south) and it's Ann-wen round here....

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/09/2018 09:14

Anwen here too, N Wales.

calmandbright · 16/09/2018 09:15

An-wen here too (Swales).

TroysMammy · 16/09/2018 09:15

Not a Welsh speaker but Welsh in South Wales and I would say Ann Wen.

welshweasel · 16/09/2018 09:16

Never heard anyone say onwen! V common for people to say ann-win though, which grates a bit. Definitely Ann-when here in South Wales.

SocksRock · 16/09/2018 09:17

My daughter is Ann-when, welsh speaking husband and family.

TheHalfBloodPrincess · 16/09/2018 09:18

To chuck a spanner in the works - dds best friend is Anwen and she pronounces it like Ahn-wen (s.wales)

NoSquirrels · 16/09/2018 09:19

Never heard On-wen! It’s Ann-when and Anwen is a beautiful name.

RandomChitchat · 16/09/2018 09:19

Ann-when here too

Lookingforadvice123 · 16/09/2018 13:09

It's Ann-when, you'll get people mispronouncing it though unfortunately, even if you're in Wales!

Ameliarose16 · 16/09/2018 13:27

The Anwyn I know it's Ann-When. I absolutely love it

spiderlight · 16/09/2018 20:10

Ann-Wen (South Wales). Never heard it pronounced Onn-wen.

bigbluebus · 16/09/2018 20:16

I was brought up in Wales and I'd definitely say An-wen - although I don't think I actually knew any.

TheActualLastJedi · 16/09/2018 20:18

Fluent Welsh speaker from South Wales here it's Ann-When.

You can't make a O sound (oh) from a A sound (Ah)

SemperIdem · 18/09/2018 11:18

Have they confused Anwen (Welsh) with Olwen (Cornish)?
