Afra/Astra

Does anyone like the names either Afra or Astra for a girl? They seem a bit too out there but I like the sounds of them:)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Cosmoa · 13/09/2018 10:47

I love the name Astra! I loved the name Astraea with Astra for short

LadyKilbarron · 13/09/2018 10:52

I would have called ds1 Aphra after Aphra Behn had he been a girl - one of the first women to make her living through her writing so a strong role model as well.

Sungura · 13/09/2018 12:33

Stella, Aurora, Nova, Skye, Aluna, Celeste. All these names come to mind when I hear Astra. Lookin at the stars. I like it better than Afra, even though I typically love African names. Do you want to picture your child soaring through the clouds, or playing on the dusty earth? I play games like that with names. Astra is amongst the stars, Afra draws pictures in the sand. 😄🌆🏜🌠🤣 In short, I don't like either name, but if forced to choose between these two it's Astra, with her head in the clouds...

TheGateauIsInTheChateau · 13/09/2018 12:35

Afra just makes me think Afro

Astra... I only know one middle aged very nutty one (and not even aware she’s stalky and nutty).

Cosmoa · 13/09/2018 12:43

@Sungura I like the way you think! ❤️

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 13/09/2018 12:59

I like Aphra too.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/09/2018 13:07

I love them both - particularly Afra. I have come across it in a book I love, and the character with that name is a strong, independent woman, so that is what I associate with the name.

LeeMiller · 13/09/2018 13:50

Astra should be nice but I just think Vauxhall. If it's the celestial meaning you like the names suggested by Sungura are much better.

I know a Persian Afra and a British Aphra (short for Aphrodite) - I slightly prefer the latter spelling.

Sammilouwho · 13/09/2018 13:53

We liked Astra, until we realised it was a car. So we chose Astrid! I loved Aphra but hubby vetoed it.

Izzygrey · 13/09/2018 17:25

I have a friend called Afra who is Ghanaian. Apparently it is the name they give to little girls born on a Friday

ladycarlotta · 13/09/2018 18:18

So happy to see the Aphra love on this thread! I adore it and want it if our baby's a girl. DP needs more persuading.

MikeUniformMike · 13/09/2018 20:53

How about Astral. Astrid is lovely but likely to be very popular.
Nowt wrong with having a car name as your first name. Nova is much liked on here. Zoe and Clio are perfectly ok.

FogCutter · 13/09/2018 21:01

Aphra is a better spelling I think and Aphra Benn is a great role model!

Astra just reminds me of the car.

Really love Astrid, this would have been our baby girl's name but we had boys!

Snoopychildminder · 13/09/2018 21:17

I love Nova, Astrid, quite like Astro but I may have just made that up 😃😂 Esther/Aster I think your on to something OP.

LordOfTheFleas · 13/09/2018 21:31

Astra would make me think she'd been born in the back of a Vauxhall. Excellent car btw, not crappy at all!

Astrid is lovely if you like that.

Afra sounds some kind of healthy grain imo.

RavenWings · 13/09/2018 21:32

I want to like Aphra but it always reminds me of aphrodisiac.

I really like Asta. Not sure about Astra - nice, but the car thing. Afra reminds me of Afro tbh so it's a no.

Tbh Aifric beats them all!

rainingcatsanddog · 14/09/2018 07:37

If you're in the UK people will think of the car so personally would avoid Astra. I know that there are car names that are also girl names but strangely I think of Kia, Mercedes, Octavia as girls names before car names. Confused

Stormsurfer · 14/09/2018 07:44

Aphra is short for aphradite ? And Asta is better than Astra.

pineappple · 14/09/2018 07:52

Nooo not Astra! You might as well consider Corsa!

ladycarlotta · 14/09/2018 07:58

@stormsurfer Aphra is not short for 'Aphradite' (Aphrodite?). It's a name from Hebrew - it's in the old testament. Oprah comes from the same root, funnily enough.

Stormsurfer · 14/09/2018 09:15

Sorry, I wasn't sure hence the ? But I did know someone who used that as the abbreviation.

MikeUniformMike · 14/09/2018 20:04

Asta la vista

MikeUniformMike · 14/09/2018 20:05

Riley is a car as is Carina, and Portia, at a pinch.
Elise, Elan, and Jensen.

MikeUniformMike · 14/09/2018 20:06

Robin too.

Twillow · 14/09/2018 21:11

I love Astra - starlike, like Stella.
