Currently expecting DS1. I am totally stuck with boys names and keep coming back to James. Is it too dull?

James is an enduring classic name, you can’t go wrong.

AddictedToRadley · 12/09/2018 01:49

CuntyMcFuckerson my DS also gets Jimbob as a petname, although I’m only allowed to say it in our house because DS doesn’t want his mates hearing it and calling him JimBob too! Grin

villainousbroodmare · 12/09/2018 02:01

I love it.

Jenijena · 12/09/2018 02:16

Another biased one speaking, we chose it for all the reasons above. In his year of 60 at school there is one other.

Rjd13 · 12/09/2018 02:26

It’s on my shortlist - love it!

BusterGonad · 12/09/2018 03:19

Tiger, 'there are quite a few other boys' names which are classic and won't date, surely? William, John, Henry, George, Charles, Richard, Robert, Edward, Andrew, Michael, Stephen, Thomas, David, Alexander, Benjamin, Christopher, Philip, Peter, Paul, Daniel, Nicholas, Joseph.'

I have to disagree, I think a lot of the names you've listed are imo very old fashioned! I can't imagine ever having a boy and calling him Richard, John or Philip!

Quangot · 12/09/2018 07:49

James is a lovely classic name. I only know of one James of primary age. It seems to be a very popular middle name but quite unusual to hear it as a first name.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 12/09/2018 08:07

I agree Richard, John and Philip are out of favour at the moment, but names of kings and saints tend to be names that last. John is a fine name and I don't know why it isn't used more. Richard probably suffers because of puerile sniggering about Dick. Philip is a bit of a stretch, I suppose, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has a revival in a few years. Lots of people coming up to the age of having a baby will have a Dad or Grandpa called Philip/Phil.

I have a James because I love this song. We sometimes call him Jim too. Don't like Jamie though.

I've got a James. We chose it because it could take him anywhere in life. And we liked it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/09/2018 09:43

James is lovely. So much better than Luke.

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 12/09/2018 10:54

I love James - it's simple, beautiful and timeless. Very popular but not faddy, and I only know two Jameses under five, one baby and one preschooler.

Our newborn DS2 was nearly called James but we ended up going for another classic name which went better with the middle names we'd chosen. Both our sons names are on @TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap 's list!

HPLikecraft · 12/09/2018 15:03

Always liked James.
Interestingly, I was just saying the other day to someone that it was the only name i could think of which is never out of style.

Matthew has tailed off, and there are very few young Johns, Davids, Marks, Philips, Michaels and Christophers these days.

Conversely, Harry, George, Fred etc. may be popular again now, but were 'old man' names a few years ago.

funinthesun18 · 12/09/2018 17:21

I have a James Smile
Such a lovely name.

Lucy1103 · 12/09/2018 22:04

Classic, strong and lovely name. Only ever met nice James/Jamies!

sharon818 · 12/09/2018 22:06

I wouldn't use it as it's a bit common but if how popular it is isn't something you're concerned about then I think it's a lovely name!

CaviarAndCigarettes · 12/09/2018 22:07

Good strong name! Love it.

Dreamingofprosecco · 12/09/2018 22:17

Thanks for the feedback everyone 👍

I have one Smile.

He's always been a Jim, he was a little old man even when he was a baby! Primary age now.

JeSuisPrest · 12/09/2018 22:25

Love it. Would have been our choice for a boys name but we had a girl

Good strong name. I would always feel reassured being in any difficult situation with a James, Richard or Michael on hand. They sound like good guys to have in your corner. Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 12/09/2018 22:31

Ah it’s lovely, and my DBs middle name. Although, you could go for the Gaelic, Seamus? Which considering the other convoluted Gaelic names in my family, I’m surprised my DB got off that lightly tbh Grin

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 12/09/2018 22:32

I love James and think it is much more of a timeless classic than Luke, Jake or George

Also love Jim/Jimmy but not keen on Jamie

I wouldn't say it has been overused in the past 20 years although obviously isn't unusual either

TrickyKid · 12/09/2018 22:32

I love James, probably my favourite boys name.

welshmist · 12/09/2018 22:41

My DS is James, the family always called him Jamie because that was the name I loved but thought he should have James on his birth certificate. He is called James at school and Jay by some friends. He answers to all

HonestReally · 13/09/2018 01:15

I think it's a great name. I prefer it to Jamie.
