Thoughts on the name Winifred? I didn't like it at first but it's growing on me as a classic but underused name.
Would be known as Winnie.

AmabelleOnabike · 07/09/2018 21:19

I know of one nn Freddie. She is 74 though.

polkadotpixie · 07/09/2018 21:19

I like it! My grandma is called Winnie and I've always thought it was a cute name

Lynne1Cat · 07/09/2018 21:19

No. It's an old lady's name

OnwardMarch · 07/09/2018 21:20

love it and love winnie.

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2018 21:20

No, not for me.

Failingat40 · 07/09/2018 21:22

It's underused for a good reason.

Awful name.

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 07/09/2018 21:22

Churchill and Mandela are my immediate associations with Winnie. But it sounds a bit Enid Blyton to me, sorry x

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 07/09/2018 21:35

No. It's in the same book as Edith, Margaret, Ivy and Evelyn.

Heavystream · 07/09/2018 21:35

If we have a DD it will be Winnie but short for Winona. Would that be an option?

Firenight · 07/09/2018 21:36

Very trendy sounding I reckon but probably marmite enough not to be overused.

Pollydidntputthekettleon · 07/09/2018 21:36

Not bad! I love Winnie so much!

mikapatika · 07/09/2018 21:37

Love it 😍

Zoflorabore · 07/09/2018 21:37

It's awful. Has Fred on the end.

I just couldn't imagine looking at a beautiful squishy newborn and being told her name
Is Winifred. If you do name your baby this then expect lots of awkward silences or fake attempts at how lovely it is.

I know lots of the older names have been revived but some have not. And for good reason.

OublietteBravo · 07/09/2018 21:38

I actually really like it (it was my grandmother’s middle name). Although my current favourite is Phyllis.

lottiegarbanzo · 07/09/2018 21:46

Like and not sure at the same time.

Winnie makes me think of the so sweet and adorable girl in The Wonder Years.

Win is an old lady's name but sort of cool at the same time.

Winifred sounds very Old English, in the same way as Matilda, Elinor and um Ethelred. Great if you want to acknowledge an ancestor called Fred though.

madeoficecream · 07/09/2018 21:47

LOVE it!!

Pinkbendyman · 07/09/2018 21:50

My Grandma was Winifred, Winnie for short.

She lived to the grand old age of 100!

A beautiful name.

Liquoricelake · 07/09/2018 21:51

No. It's awful. It's a very unattractive and harsh sounding name, and Winnie is no better.

MikeUniformMike · 07/09/2018 21:53

I know a Winnie in her late 70s and one in her late 80s.
Fern Britton and Phil Vickery's daughter is a Winnie. And there's the broadcaster Winifred Robinson
Winifred (Gwenffrewi) was a welsh saint.
I think it is lovely. Freda/Freddie/Win could be alternative nns.

Ellieboolou27 · 07/09/2018 21:55

3 years ago I’d have said NO WAY, now I’m best friends with a Winnie and she’s great. I now love the name, although I remember secretly sniggering when she first introduced herself Grin

campion · 07/09/2018 21:56

Comes under the 'trying too hard' category of naming. Don't do it. She'll be grateful to you one day... unless your alternative is Ethelreda!

spugzbunny · 07/09/2018 21:56

I think it's great! It was my Grandma's name and I think it's lovely!
